This is the Stuffing tubes just  uncovered  on my boat. I thought  they might have just been tubes but the  ball bearing is sprung loaded . Question anyone know of a grease gun that fits wee ones like this or is it just a Syringe and pressure that depresses the Bearing

they are oiling nipples, just like they use on lathes.
you need an oil gun with a spring loaded spout, as you press it onto the nipple, the ball bearing is depressed, pumping oil in and as you remove, the ball reseals the nipple.

 Water or oil Martin  mines are  dry and I've never used them yet oilwise

This is slightly cheaper and has a point which you may be able to use to depress the ball.

Press down on the ball with a sharpish pointy thing and drip oil in from a proper oil can?

Thans guys have it in mind to  eventually try a small syringe with a bit of poly tube  and  some kind of pin inserted in the syringe .Though as its never been done in the few years I've had her ''If it aint Broke''

You could try oil in a ball point pen with the insert removed.

Or just unscrew them (probably 1/4" thread) and buy three 'normal' grease nipples to replace them.


The number of 'reads' may be to do with the fact that in the index, this topic shows as -
"Anyone got nipples ...".

Good thinking Ken  along the same as a syringe  with say a cocktail stick inserted  to keep the oil in then released as the ball is depressed

We went "Metric" last century - M5, M6 maybe. Having said that they are not conventional GREASE nipples, they appear to be oil nipples. Conventional grease nipples are cone shaped with a 'ball' head. An alternative is a 'TAT' type nipple.

Hi all


Just noticed this post (having arrived at it via logging in rather than from any dodgy Google searches honest). What about replacing the spring with a less powerful one or shortening the existing one. Then just the pressure from the in coming oil/grease in a syringe might work.
I hate grease in stern tubes. I creates immense amounts of drag and then eventually sets hard when you shelve the model for a few months.
