How do you launch your boats?
« on: October 15, 2015, 05:18:51 pm »

Hi Guys,

How do you launch your models?

I have webbed straps to launch my Puffer and Hibernia.

The Hibernia is getting very heavy for me to safely launch using the straps.

Also what would you use to wheel them from car to waterside?

thanks

:o For launching I use a launching frame made from 18mm copper pipe, far better than straps especially for heavy boats and gives greater control, for transporting from car to lake my daughters bought me a 4 wheel postroom trolley can carry 3 boats, tool box,2 launchers(as above),radio gear and lunch, there are several designs for launchers out there, depends on size and weight of boat,a club member was making them for other members at material cost but I made two of my own,one for larger boats and one for the smaller type, pretty simple to make a few feet of pipe, some elbows and pipe insulation to protect the hull of boat,I made mine longer so that i don't have to bend down( saves back and knees when you getting on a bit)and I seen some people use plastic pipe instead of copper, and a last tip seal the ends up with resin that way it floats if you drop it in the lake......Ray. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi Mate

To transport my heavy models to the lakeside i bought a folding sack trolly, 2 wheels and it folds down like a suitcase, made of alloy, very light and my boats sit in there launching frame on the trolly.

Bought it from Costco about £20

Hi Danny,
Dave from gymbc here. Looked at Alan's cradle, not sure it would take weight of tug. see you at Loemex.

Hi jarvo, I have one of those trollies, and very useful it is for moving boat around. had a problem at an exhibition, tug 4ft long, door 3ft wide.

Hi Sparky, Like the idea of using copper pipe, stronger than using plastic overflow pipe.

Popular down at our club at Poole is a modified shopping trolley. Remove the Bag and, depending upon the actual construction, modify the trolley to take a boat. We have vertical concrete walls that run from ground level downwards so these trolleys can also be wheeled vertically down the side into the water for launch and recovery.

Hi guys, quite a few of our club members use fishing basket trolleys they collapse down
And the pneumatic wheels can be removed easily.

This is exactly what I use to transport my ATLANTIS yacht (35lbs) to the lake slip. Easy to modify to take a boat/ship and cheap. Wheels are removable and the trolley folds flat.   - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MDI-Pump-up-Pneumatic-Fold-Away-Trolley-for-Fishing-Seatboxes-with-Folds-Flat/351486492294?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3Db6335b63fba9405594f23b798fbd7190%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D351486492294

I've been using this trolley for several years and it has no problems coping with my 26lbs square rigger.

The design could be beefed up to cater for heavier models by substituting the 15mm copper tubing frame for 22mm tube. No special provision is necessary for round bilge hulls; the keel rests on the lateral supports whilst one side rests against the uprights - though cradles could be fabricated to slip over the lateral supports if desired.

PS. The model in the foreground of one of the pics is full scale and is available at a very attractive hourly rate - 'is that two sugars in your tea, Reg?'

I've built this boat launcher for our club.

Cheap sack barrow, 22mm copper pipe, thick pipe insulation and 2" webbing.

Hi David,
We have 2 fairmounts in the club.

Both were bought ready built, but electronics were installed by myself.
