I own one of each (1 x9d, 1 x9e)
the design of the Taranis (both x9d and x9e) affords the owner the ability to upload firmware directly onto the device. in order to stay in compliance with the letter of the law, there is an EU version of the software that units sold in the EU must have on it. there is however a loophole. all receivers sold prior to the date of the change in the law can still be used. if you happen to be lucky enough to have in your possession older receivers, then it is perfectly fine for you to "upgrade" your EU compliant radio with firmware that will allow you to continue to use your older receivers.
the x9e ships with a newer version of the firmware (2.1.x) versus the x9d (2.0.x) since august, there have been 6 updates to the firmware on the x9e, fixing the majority of the problems it had when it shipped. so far, to my count, there have been 3 serious issues, with the latest resolved in firmware version 2.1.6.
there has been an update in the hardware. the first versions had a brushed aluminum faceplate, and came with an aluminum case. the current version comes with a faceplate that looks to be made of carbon-fibre (but it isn't) and a soft-sided case. the actual hardware updates appear to be internal, adjusting the sizes of a few capacitors in the RTC and charging circuits.
according to most of the postings at rcgroups.com, either buy them from Aloft Hobbies in the US, or t9Hobbies in europe. both shops appear to have european chargers... you can either buy an additional unit, or specify a different unit when ordering.
one big caveat to buying stuff from Hobbyking or ebay. it has been said that FrSky requires warranty work be submitted through your original dealer.
Hobbyking is notorious for bad customer service, and i wouldn't know where to begin warranty proceedings with an ebay dealer.
