Boating water near SO45 ?
« on: January 31, 2016, 04:35:27 pm »

Hello again. I've been off the site for six months or so, mainly due to a somewhat extended process of moving house. Having finally moved and got fairly sorted I have been contemplating my models and wondering if further modelling (of r/c boats at least) is going to be practical for me.

One problem is the the size/layout of our new home. Having moved south with consequent downsizing a reasonable working area will not be easy or cheap to implement.
Another problem, ironic as we live only a mile from Southampton Water and next to the pretty wet New Forest, is the apparent lack of anywhere nearby suitable to operate such a model. There's no shortage of water around - it just seems to all be off limits or unsuitable. (Before you all shout "Canoe Lake at Southsea" it's 36 miles each way.)

So before I make a decision about doing something else, does anyone know of a place suitable for electric r/c boating within easy reach (10 miles oe so) of Hythe, Hants?

Foxhills lake should be fairly close to you.

Hello Plague,

The best boating water near you is Setley Pond, home of Solent Radio Control Model boat Club. The advantage with this pond is that it has a gravel bottom, small beach, car park up to the water etc. There is no mud, which you will find on a lot of the New Forest Ponds. I speak as one who has looked!
Another point on New Forest Ponds is that they all belong to the Forestry Commission and you should have insurance to use them. Use of the Pond is split over the week between Scale and sailing. Foxhills, The Southampton Model Power Boat Club, is predominantly Fast Electric and IC when they meet on Sunday mornings. I am a member of both but would suggest you look at Solent first as there are more like minded people there, and annual membership is only £10 at the moment. Sunday morning is the prime scale time at the moment. When coming from Hythe I would suggest you route via Beaulieu. Avoid Lymington like the plague (Sorry!), especially in the summer as they invented traffic jams and are very good at them! May see you there sometime. Check out the website at www.srcmbc.org.uk

Thank you all and especially Buccaneer. I was looking at Foxhills and thinking it sounded a bit heavy on the fast stuff, so Setley looks like the one to go and see. They are more or less the same distance from me anyway.

I'd go to Setley via Beaulieu by choice anyway - Lymington would be a long way round and I thought Lyndhurst (the other way) was the place for traffic jams. Avoid anything beginning L I guess. But that's a handy tip as I was wondering about applying to do voluntary work in Lymington but I think I'll stick with something more local.

I've noticed that the Forestry people / New Forest are quite 'ruly' which was why I wondered if model boating was going to be possible at all, so it's good to know there are a couple of official locations. Most councils/owners require insurance, so that's expected - presumably the clubs have bulk cover when you are a member.

Yes, we suddenly decided to move and put the house on the market about October 2014, so I immediately starting packing and clearing (we'd been there nearly 30 years and one does accumulate stuff  %)  ). In the end, after suffering most of the possible hassles of moving, we got down here last August.

I have been using my Runcorn MBC hat during the (rather rare this year) cold spells and will continue to do so  :-))

Hello, yes I did get Lymington and Lyndhurst muddled up, I quite often do. I know which one I meant but gave it the wrong name!
No problem with insurance, it is included in the club fees.
