I think I have been scamed
« on: April 10, 2016, 03:56:55 pm »

Hi all I wonder if anybody can help me I stupidly sent £110 for a bank transfer for a model fire boat to a chap called Lxxxxx Wxxxxx, however despite many promises the boat has never arrived, I posted on the site I found the advert and someone said they thought he had been on here doing much the same if anyone can help me with the address or something I would appreciate it.
 thank
Kevin

hi, you are probably better getting hold of one of the site moderators and speak to them directly rather than posting this guys name on an open forum......I'm not in anyway saying or implying that you aren't telling the truth BUT it wouldn't be the first time someones name has been mentioned like this from a first time poster and it wasn't true..the model boat world isn't that big so potentially you have come to the right place  :-))

Hello first thing's first I would like to apologise if my first post was incorrect or caused upset or offence it was not my intention, i have been a member for a while however two or three  lots serious bed health has kept me from doing much.
As to my problem I was told that another persion that it was not the first time he has heard the name for the same reason if I am  wrong I'll be the first to apologize however three weeks and four messages promising it has had been posted, this has left me  low on money and with nothing to show for it,I  only live on disability money and thought an investment on what looked like a nice boat would keep me out of trouble while renovating it, however it is done totally the opposite shot myself in the foot so if the moderators feel that this is not the place to ask or warn other members just in case then will you please remove the post it all together I will understand.
Kind regards and full apologise.

your best bet is gather all the evidence you have and go to the police and see what they can do . If what you say has happened then it is fraud

Your bank will also be able to help, as they will know where your money went from the sort code & acc number, it is difficult to open a bank account without some form of 'proof of I.D.'

Don't rely on either the police or banks - they simply will not be interested.

boat was purchased from a buy & sell model boats & submarines page on facebook , 3 weeks after transfering his money , and several lame excuses and failed promises of delivery the model has failed to materialise loks like the vendor has happily taken the money  , removed his advert from the sales page then given several false promises  . as i understand it hes no longer responding to messages from kevin

:-)) So sad to hear that another fellow modeler has been caught by this person,I have posted about this before on Mayhem and Colin Bishop has as well, sadly your not the only one he has conned, the amounts are running into thousands now and he just chances his name and carries on regardless,he always insists on bank transfer, doesn't want Paypal and backs out from collection with cash from him saying he is never in,just be careful guys, look for warning signs and if in doubt back out of it even if it looks like the deal of the century.

I have only ever made 1 purchase using 'bank transfer', luckily everything went fine for me, but I was given a good bit of advice by my bank's financial advisor afterwards, they told me to do it through my credit card account instead of my current account, there are safeguards built in to a credit card acc. that covers this kind of thing, so you are more likely to get your cash back.

I know doesn't help on this occasion, but it may save others from this kind of scam.

Yes, it should be investigated but in practice the police will probably decline to act unless you have bombproof evidence, not only that you have been scammed but that others have too. Hearsay via forums, is not enough and they have other priorities so a lot of crime, and especially fraud, goes uninvestigated. Some while back, a bunch of Somalis managed to persuade the idiots at RBS to send a replacement credit card for me to their North London address despite the bank knowing full well that it wasn't my billing address. Fortunately it was intercepted by a good neighbour who became suspicious and alerted me. The bank simply cancelled the card and issued me with a new one - no apologies, the police said that no crime had actually been committed - money stolen(!) so they couldn't act. Basically it is so common that neither could be bothered. The banks stand any losses and simply up their charges to their customers to cover them so we all pay in the end. The police are probably more interested in chasing Cliff Richard.

In this instance the bank has done nothing wrong so won't be interested.

No, it isn't fair but that is the way it is. A private prosecution through the small claims court might produce a result but the chances of it being enforced will be low unless the scammer cooperates, which of course they won't, and the buyer will probably then be even further out of pocket.

Colin beat me to the punch.
Police won't really be interested unless there is a good chance of a conviction. Serious fraud is a serious crime and they would be more interested. The banks are not interested as it would cost them too much time/money to do anything and again, there is little chance of a conviction.

well you are both wrong
TT the police investigate and then pass it on to the CPS who decide on weather to bring charges .

Depends on how you deal with the police ,and how much home  work you have done . You have to hound them in to do there job . get your MP to put pressure on them to do there job. going to the press works wonders .  remember they work for you and you the tax payer pays the wages.

Well that not my personal experience.
When my car was robbed a year ago, I told them who did it and how... nothing!   >:-o

Selling /buying on Facebook:

While the police may not prosecute in THIS case, any "intelligence" will be added to their 'files' which may help in getting a successful prosecution at a later date.
Always report to police .

Sorry guys but there is a certain person out there who
Has been on here, Facebook and eBay pretending to sell model boats
But instead Ripping people out of their money.

People need to keep reporting the crime and eventually when the police get enough evidence
They can and will act but to say they are not interested lets the scum off Scot free that's what
They are counting on!!

Which police though? The ones you are reporting it to or the force in whose jurisdiction the scammer lives. Just how much coordination is there on what is in their perception a very minor crime? These days if you are burgled you may just get a crime number and told to contact your insurers.

In reality, if this guy is scamming people up and down the country, at what point is a policeman going to decide that it is worth several hours investigative work to put together a case? It just doesn't seem very likely to me. My case was like Martin's - we knew who the perpetrators were but no interest was taken.
