What size ESC
« on: June 09, 2016, 05:10:40 pm »

Should  I use this motor that runs at 30amp (Turnigy D3536/8 1000KV Brushless Outrunner Motor) on a 30amp ESC or would it be advisable to go for a 50amp ESC.

Is there a rule of thumb for this setup.

You really need to know what amperage the motor pulls in your set up. If its at the higher end then a ESC of higher amperage would be recommended. However, if your set up pulls considerably less than 30 amps then the 30amp ESC would be OK protected by a suitable fuse.

Thanks dougal99,  not as cut and dried as I hoped it would be.  In my case I will have to go for overkill not having the know how to work it out.

Kv(rpm/v) 1000
Weight (g) 102
Max Current(A) 30
Resistance(mh) 0
Max Voltage(V) 15
Power(W) 430
Shaft A (mm) 5
Length B (mm) 36
Diameter C (mm) 36
Can Length (mm) 18
Total Length E (mm) 52

I would go for the 50amp for the simple reason of peace of mind.....it would be very difficult to work out
what amperage your set up will pull as without an esc you simply cant do it...Ill stand corrected on that one !!!!.

What boat is it going to be installed in

You can use a speed controller which is rated higher than the motor. It's not advisable to do it the other way round. "Evens" isn't fair, is it?
If in doubt, go bigger and show them all you don't care!

thanks Stavros better safe than sorry.   It is for a huntsman 31  that DM Featured in Model Boats mag.  I have upped the size 200% to 46 inches
and will fit 2 Turnigy D3536/8 1000KV Brushless Outrunner Motors and  2 blade racing props. 37.5mm  and of course 2 50amp ESC.

Thanks Dave M.  Bigger it is then.    Kind Regards Glyn

PS. feel free to disagree with my setup,  that's the way I learn.

I've been searching this very thing this afternoon.

What I came up with is divide watts of motor by supply voltage equals esc amps, then add 10-15% for safety.

In my case it was 7.4volts / 102watts = 13 and a bit amps, so a 20amp esc would suffice.

But I do have to say having read many pages and viewed a dozen youtube vids, there are any number of ways to do it, none of them seem to be the de facto method to use.

Your method is very sensible, Brian.
