Small Swordsman kit?
« on: June 16, 2016, 10:24:14 am »

A while back there was always a sale post on eBay for a small Swordsman kit made from some sort of foam....I can't remember the name of the stuff, but chances are someone here will know what I mean.

Questions: does anyone know if the kit is still in production and where I might find one, please?

Thanks fellas...

Thanks for that Brian...close, but no cigar.

This was a small (around 18" or so) Swordsman kit made from epa/epva/empv/something along those lines...might even have been Deepron(?)..available in kit form.

It's DEPRON sheet the kit was made from,  started at £28 then went up to £30 . . .
Hasn't been listed for a while , BUT this guy with the BANANA boat listed at the same time . . . .

Aah...now we're getting somewhere. Mind you, I think a sailing banana on our local lake might not go down too well...anyway, an email to the seller has been duly sent, stand by for a situation report.

Thanks Bill, much appreciated.

Hi, Not sure ian makes the kit you are on about, however the Banana boat is a great introduction for kids to model boat building and sailing (yes I am speaking from experience). My 10 year old daughter loved building hers and regularly takes it sailing. :-))
Ian does have a web site (http://www.nigancraft.com/home) with more details.

I have built one of those and to be honest was not impressed.
The depron is easy to cut and glue, but, really hard to get a good finish on. I eventually settled for it being not up to my usual standard.
As for running, well, thats another story, I put in the running gear as specified, expecting it to go like poo off a shovel  because it is light, and, it went ok but not for long before the torque roll from the outrunner had it on it's beam ends!
So, shuffling weight around, anded up with a list one way at slow stop/slow speed, and still wanting to run on beam ends at full speed.
Any attempt to turn at speed was met with cavitation as the prop popped out of the water.
Added trim tabs, no improvement.
A smaller diameter motor and/or prop might help, but I got fed up with it ans ripped out the hardware to keep and ditched the rest.
Good luck if you decide to have a go.

Hi, I bought one of these Depron kits last year, and to be honest, I had great fun with it! Yes the motor / prop set up did try to turn the boat over! But after some experimenting with smaller prop, and repositioning of the battery pack made everything much more stable, and still fast.

Best wishes

If you cover a depron hull with a very thin layer of glass cloth and epoxy resin, and then roller it with a sponge roller, you will have a very tough strong hull, totally waterproof and very light.

Not much different to treating a balsa hull, just don't try using cellulose dope or polyester resin!
