Painting a Severn
« on: June 05, 2016, 09:06:31 am »

Although i am a bit away from painting i am starting to think about it.
I am wondering about the red and yellow lines that run down the boat. Are these masked and sprayed or can you get stick on vinyl coachlines from anywhere?

After trawling through past postings I have gleaned that appropriate acrylic spray cans are
Orange
Halfords VW brilliant orange or Carplan Red 40
Blue
Halfords Oxford/Baliol Blue or Halfords Galaxy Blue or Carplan Blue 13
Anti fouling red
I don't have a clear choice in mind for this.
Comments appreciated

Hi Les

As you say those halfords colours are the usual choice with red primer for the anti fouling. Adrian does sell the red and yellow vinyl stripes although eBay would probably be cheaper. 6mm width is what you need

I've been thinking about this myself, is it 6mm for a 1:16 or 1:12?

The red and yellow stripes on full size lifeboats are indeed vinyl stripes, not painted.

Les,
The Yellow/red stripes combined on a Severn class are 170mm wide. This makes 85mm each, divide by 12  = 7mm.
Interestingly, a Mersey which I have measured is only 150mm total which would make 6mm at 1/12th scale.
I would have doubted that the RNLI would have different sized stripes for each class but it certainly did when I measured them.
Armed with this knowledge and not being able to obtain 7mm wide strips, I used wider ones and cut them down to 7mm, I can tell you that this is not an easy job, keeping the cuts exactly parallel caused many failures. Do not forget that the stripes do not butt right up to the rubber fender, there is a small strip of the blue hull showing above them. I did join long lengths on the hull which is exactly what the RNLI do with a slight overlap.

Thanks chaps for the helpful replies.
Can anyone state sourcing options and precise colour Names?
I used to deal with an adhesive tape supplier and im sure they used to cut rolls of tape to the correct width as a roll using a knife blade tool something like a parting off tool on a lathe. I have a lathe but these things are not always as easy as they seem. Still might be worth a try
17-09 did you measure the width of the white Waterline?  (I bet you did☺)

Les
You bet correctly, If you study the photographs from Kim you will be able to work it out from the depth markings. Stern shots show just under four graduations which means that as each graduation is 20mm, the width is 75mm or 3 inches  = 1/4inch at 1/12th.
At the bow it is slightly bigger, just over four graduations 85mm = 9/16ths at 1/12th. That's why they call me a rivet counter!
I have just re-measured the 1:1 version of 17-09 for you and can confirm the width of the red/yellow stripes is 170mm combined, with a 20mm gap between the top stripe and the rubber fender.
Regards, 1/12th scale  17-09

Hi Les

I have a book at home that shows a lifeboat in the paint shop and it gives all the current colours in RAL numbers, I'll post them later when I get home.

I'm going to have a go at getting water-bourne automotive paint in the correct colours then use a 2 pack clear over the top for the shine. I have done some automotive spraying before so hopefully it will go well.... Time will tell...

Hi Craig
I Googled  'RNLI colours' and there is a pdf called ' Unmistakably our brand in brief'.
It gives info on the range of RNLI colours.
However for the blue and orange I am going with Carplan Blue 13 and Red 40.  My local motor factors were selling them off and I paid £2 a tin. It's acrylic paint.
The paint colours have been discussed in previous posts and so there is guidance on what off the shelf colours work but I wondered about the coach lines as I don't expect the colour selection will be as wide.

Les,
Reverse mask the waterline, spray a white band and mask back to it, much neater and it won't peel off!
You can then alter the width of the line if you are considering doing what I mentioned in a previous comment.

Hi Mate, Model Technics TrimLine, available from Model shops or ebay, comes in different colours with 8 different widths on a 2.5 meter roll. .5, .8, 1.3, 2.1, 3.3, 5, 7, & 10mm. Intended for model aircraft, sticks like s*** to a blanket, about £5 for a roll, been using it for years, very good quality and value
