'She who must be obeyed' has made the comment that the spare bedroom is now a boatyard, there are shelves around the walls to take models, instead of pictures. The garage is also kitted out with shelves for more boats, the car stopped going in there years ago. There are another three static display items in the hallway. So my question is 'How many is enough?'
She reckons that I can have as many as I want, provided the grand total doesn't exceed 7. Thankfully she hasn't gone around the house and counted them, oh, forgot to mention the hull in the loft. I am looking at the dining room for another model of Mary Rose which is half built, sadly the kitchen walls appear to be already full of cupboards. This doesn't take into account the dozens of books that I have accumulated over the years on everything maritime.
Am I the only one with this kind of problem, is it an addiction, can it be cured, do I even want it to be?

Perhaps a bigger house? 7 does seem a very modest total. I thought I was a mere apprentice addict but I have more than that! Doesn't SWMBO appreciate that this hobby keeps you out of all sorts of other trouble?

Used to have a bigger house, then downsized to a 2 bed bungalow when the kids got fed up with me sniffing glue all day and left home!

Hi there,

well I transferred 80% of me models through the narrow loft hatch - carefully - to de-clutter my small 7 x 7 work room - which has shelves on every wall and even has me computer and a bookcase. So you can imagine how compact it is. Or, if you like, how cramped it is - cosy though.

One of these days my house will overspill and split at the seams onto the street putting all my rubbish and stuff which I have gathered over the years for all of the neighbours to see.

I once had that threat made to me, until I was spotted searching Ebay for a 40ft container and an email came back with a quote from a crane hire firm for hoisting a container into my corner of the back garden.

I've now got 18 finished boats, 4 on the way boats, 4 aircraft and 3 helicopters...Oh and a quad copter, and I'm only getting started!!!

Where do you keep your model railway?

12 boats, oops 14 I forgot the yachts, 1 in build and one on the drawing board. Several on the to do list. Garage, spare room and study all occupied.

I have one complete (needs repair) and five in progress, plus a boat given me and a hull. So I am a single novice model boater who has space at work.

The big tug is at home.

Never mind about shelves and worktops, think of all that overhead space. My grandmother usedan overhead clothes drier hoisted via a pulley system.
Now methinks..........overhead boat slings/platforms hoisted up.

When at primary school my grandaughter was asked to write about her family. She said" My Grandad lives in a wooden hut in the garden with lots of toy boats. He only comes in to eat, sleep and have a poo!!.

Which reminds me, maybe a drop down bunk and a loo would fit, I'll have a think!!.

Yipes ! That is more ships than the Royal Navy.

If I tried to smuggle another one past the ever vigilant Harbour Master the chances of being apprehended are very high. Remember, its not just the initial sneak-in delivery, its transporting it to the lake and back that compounds the level of risk.

I have a similar problem with telescopes, 17 or so, the boats, well I have 2 boot fair finds, and am well on the way with my first hull

In the wargames world, we have ways of getting shiney new toys into houses etc without significant others seeing. One way is to have the stash kept in a friends car boot and every time they visit, a small amount is put into a carrier bag until it is all inside and hidden away. A friend of mine has little stashes hidden all around the house so that when SWMBO finds a stash she only sees a small part of it. Many of my friends have their goodies delivered to work and then they bring it home in a bag or hidden somewhere else.

One chap was caught short when he bought a large army in white metal and asked a friend to bring it around on the pretence of him 'painting it' for the friend, but his wife was interested to see how it was going and when he was going to box it up and take it to his friend!

I am glad that Ron's grand daughter cares that much about him to observe all his comings and goings!

I can't, but a member of my Club has over 300 of all types and sizes. I kid you not!

I have no such problems with model acquisition - all I have to do is point to her shoe/handbag collection!

The best way is to marry a girl who has her own hobbies. Mine plays musical instrument's, does beading and knits. We were both involved in Scouting/Guides so have shelves full of camping equipment. So the big argument is usually over one of us not keeping out junk in our own spots. She does have a couple of model boats/kits that she claims are hers. but I have to make sure they are usable.
