3.5mm gold crimp on bullet connectors
« on: October 26, 2016, 05:51:13 pm »

Anyone know where I can buy 3.5mm gold CRIMP ON bullet/banana connectors ?
I do not want to use the normal solder type of banana connector which seem readily available.

Thanks

Is there a problem with solder connections?
Crimp on connections will have a greater failure rate.

Fed up with bananas desoldering due to high current use in FE's. Either my solder is VERY low temperature or I can't solder ......

Crimps are used extensively in industrial systems - your car has thousands probably, I suspect aircraft even more.
They are very good IF made correctly and that means using a proper (and probably not dirt cheap) tool. Pliers or those glorified pliers with notches are no use at all - a ratchet crimper for the specific type of crimp being used is a typical tool for an acceptable job.

On such connections for boat wiring I tend to crimp AND solder.

I learned many years ago that each type of crimp invariably requires the specific crimp tool designed for it by the manufacturer.  Modellers will almost never have access to these, so generally just squashing it with pliers etc will always fail.  Although I have a fair selection of crimp tools I will always solder as well.

If things are getting that hot then your wiring is not up to the job - you need heavier wiring and chunkier connectors - PVC is only good to around 100Deg C - have you measured the running current?

Most brushless motors are supplied with silicone wire and 3.5mm are standard on 28 motors.
So I take it that no one knows of a supplier where I can get crimp on banana connectors..... and Yes I do have professional pliers for such crimps and I do also use a variable heat soldering station.

Thanks anyway.

I don't know if this will help but when I'm soldering large gauge wires I don't bother with a soldering iron. I find it far too difficult to get the whole joint up to a decent temperature so I heat it with a pencil blow torch. I find it far easier to then fill the whole joint with solder. It does spit a bit though so be careful

I doubt such a thing is made. Gold-plated bullet connectors, which I believe are made from brass or steel, would not be maleable enough to be crimped. The crimped bullet-connectors sold by the suppliers I used to use (Farnell, CPC, RS, Rapid, JPR, Maplin etc) are either copper or tin.
Lead-free solder has a higher melting point than the old-fashioned lead-based stuff. If you buy some with a small silver content then it's even higher, but don't imagine you can get away with using a fine bit in a 25W iron! I crank my Weller 80W up to 450° and use a 5.5mm chisel-shaped bit.
Silicon insulation is OK up to 200°.

Thinking back, I am pretty sure that Mike Stothers (who makes the ESC's) has supplied me with some when I purchased on of his ESC's but I cannot find his contact now. Automotive bullets are readily available but of little use to me.

The link to his website no longer works but, according to Meridienne's website, he will be on Stand #4 at the Warwick show next month. I'm sure someone will be able to provide you with his current phone number; Mike much prefers verbal contact to E-Mails.

Don't I know that!
Maybe someone will go to Warwick and hopefully .......... Regrettably I will not be there due to having family over from NZ.
