Kyosho Fairwind Spares
« on: May 30, 2017, 09:33:17 am »

I have a Fairwind which I bought 25 years ago. It's not been on a pond for years and I'd like to restore it to its former glory! An inspection of the aluminium mast set yesterday revealed a 'spreader' is broken - any ideas on where I might be able to get a replacement?

It is shown as no 31 & 32 on page 13 of the 'manual' you attached. I believe they come as part of the 'mast set' - FW2C which has been discontinued ..... I was hoping to find alternatives via the forum ....

From memory, they are light aluminium pieces of strategic dimensions, you could fashion you own out of aluminium, brass or copper or even plastic tubing...

Else try here (under Rig Fittings)

The only critical dimension, and it isn't really that critical, is the distance from mast to line hole.  It needs to be further out than the straight run of the line, but not as far as to make the deck to spreader run vertical.  About 1-1.5mm Aluminium strip is probably favourite being easy to work into the shape shown to allow fitting the same way as the original.  Or brass, probably about 0.5-1.0mm.  Either case, chamfer the hole to avoid fraying the line.  Mostly a question of balancing strength against weight.
On other boats, I have used 3mm aluminium knitting needle.  Reasonably easy to drill 1mm holes near the ends at the right distance to give the separation wantedand fit through the right size hole drilled through the mast.

Thanks for the input guys, really appreciate it.

I'm afraid I don't have the materials, tools and, above all, skill to fabricate replacements myself. I have one 'good' one that could be used as a template - is there someone who would be willing to make a couple (to match) for me? Happy to provide my contact details (if allowed?)....

Tools- Pliers, pin chuck to hold the 1mm bit, 3mm bit and a chuck to hold that to do the chamfering and make the holes for the fixing scews, junior hacksaw, file, modelers vice.  "Workbench" is one of a set of folding occasional tables from Ikea or someplace like that.  I didn't have the skill either before I tried.
