Rigging
« on: November 04, 2017, 10:45:32 am »

Hi All,
I'm new to model boat building, I have built  the 'Will Everard' Thames barge and it kept me out of mischief for a goodly few months, I then sent off for a very cheap wooden kit, it is the 1840 10 gun brig (£12) and I could see why it is cheap, I decided to prevail and with help from Cornwall model boats for extra parts, I have re-planked over the original planks with mahogany strips but have almost come to a stop, I am stuck for pictures of the rigging which were absent from the kit's instructions, can anyone show me where I might find pictures of rigging that I can use as a guide?

Hi, I had already looked at most of these but there is not a lot of close up rigging on show,I was hoping for a website for ship rigging and just the rigging.

Maybe dennis may be able to steer you in the right direction, or possibly adapt airfix online build manuals to suit.

There are books on rigs and rigging for modelers.

I have Sailing Ship Rigs & Rigging, by Harold A. Underhill. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sailing-Ship-Rigs-Rigging-Descriptions/dp/0851741762/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1509844066&sr=8-2&keywords=sailing+ships+rigs+and+rigging It has diagrams of not just sail plans, but also perspective drawings of typical standing and running rigging for square riggers.
There are second hand copies.
There is a 'collectible' (may mean poor condition) on Amazon for about 9 pounds. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sailing-Rigging-Authentic-Famous-Vessels/dp/B00I3G7JXE/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1509844066&sr=8-7&keywords=sailing+ships+rigs+and+rigging

There is also this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rigging-Period-Models-Step-step/dp/1861760612/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1509844066&sr=8-6&keywords=sailing+ships+rigs+and+rigging

And several others listed in the 'Customers who viewed this item also viewed' at the bottom of the page.

Addendum.
The books in my last post were for static models. But can be used as a guide.

For working models I can recomend this book, An introduction to Radio Controlled Scale Sailing Models: by Phillip Vaughan Williams. Getting harder to find since Traplet stopped trading.

'Collectible' in bookseller-speak should mean near enough perfect.
