scale figures
« on: September 07, 2007, 08:08:59 am »

Has anybody got any good idea's for scale figures that dont look like something out of a cheap dolls house! I want a couple to go in a 1/12 boat, civilians, not armed forces, but the ones  I have seen look unconvincing, and are too expensive for what they are.
What would be the height of figures for a boat of this scale?
Thanks

Tamiya pit crew/ motorcycle riders appear on eBay now and then in 1:12. Can be modified with filler etc.

I have used resin dolls house figures in the past.  Ebay have loads, mostly civilian and there are some that can be used or modified quite easily.

I used a modern young man figure to make a customs officer out of for my customs cutter and it worked really well.

Loads of figures on this site either period or modern for about £5.00 each:

I have actually used resin dolls house figures in the past, there are usually loads on Ebay.  Mostly obviously civilian, I converted a figure of a modern man into a customs officer for my customs cutter and he ended up looking very good.

What would be the height of figures for a boat of this scale?

Take the full scale height say 5ft 8ins = 68ins and divide this by the scale, in your 1/12th.

68 / 12 = 5.66 ins tall. Female figures would be slightly smaller.

Hi Folks

Try this method for scaling figures. It works for me.

1/48..........1/4........1.5in
1/32..........1/3........2.0in
1/24..........1/2........3.0in
1/12..........1/1........6.0in

All this is based on a six foot tall figure as a good base to start from.  Easy, ain't it??

The first two digits give the answer immediately.  Eg...............1/48 minus the eight equals what you are looking for.  ie 1/4 of six foot and so on...

If you assume 6 foot it is six inches.  I usually assume 6 foot for ease of calculating and I think it is a reasonable average height.

There are firms around that make extremely lifelike figures on a "one-off" basis. A pal of mine wanted 1:12 figures to go on a Windermere steam launch.....£600 each. Still interested? Thought not!

Not much regard for us stunted ones then.

Don't forget, if you are lucky enough to be able to get your hands on a couple of the old Tamiya 1/12th pit crew you can achieve the results that our Stan did with his.

They do occassionally crop up on Ebay but not so often nowadays unless you are prepared to deal with Taiwan:
