Straightening prop shaft
« on: June 08, 2018, 03:02:38 pm »

I recently had to buy a length of stainless rod and cut a 3/16" thread on it for a replacement propshaft on a Dumas Chris Craft model.
The company who supplied the rod attached it to a sturdy length of wood but it arrived slightly bent.
I took it to our nearest archery shop (Wrotham, Kent) and the owner straightened it for me on an arrow straightening jig.
The type he used is the bench mount type with a dial gauge and is a precision piece of kit.
He did not charge for the straightening, but I did buy some fletching glue, which is very strong and weather resistant. (Fletch Tite Platinum, £4)
When you look at the stresses that arrows have to put up with, well, it speaks for itself.

3/16 stainless sounds quite hard compared to a hollow aluminium arrow. I am so impressed that you actually have a local archery shop!

When I was into archery, many moons ago, I used to shoot Easton Ace arrows (Aluminium Carbon Extreme) these were a very high grade aluminium tube core with carbon fibre laid over it. They are about the thickness of a knitting needle and so stiff that when you first handle one you cannot believe how stiff and light they are.
The guy spent about ten minutes on the shaft and when he had finished and spun it on the jig there was no perceptible imperfections.
I also got a bit lucky with the die for cutting the thread, The Tap and Die Company were clearing some dies that they describe as HQS, which the guy said are better than HSS, reduced from £38 to a fiver. I had my doubts, but it cut the 316 stainless no trouble (except for my clumsiness, no machine shop training)
So I now have a new propshaft and a spare and a new brushless motor which lines up as well as I can measure with the shaft.
Hopefully off to the lake on Sunday.
