3MM White Pinstrip to replicate Holly (and teak) deck
« on: June 18, 2018, 03:03:42 am »

Has anyone used professional grade 3mm white pinstriping to replicate the look of holly on a mahogany boat deck?
Reason being, I have an old boat (new to me) that originally had the deck built with teak and a lighter wood to simulate holly (or something similar). I sanded the deck as far as possible and stained it. However, the white wood did not fully accept the stain and it looks terrible (the teak is great!)I see only 3 options:1-Cut out and rebuild the entire deck (not my preferred choice)2-Mask the area where the decking is and just paint a dark color that matches the mahogany), or black. which is a nice contrast to the chrome hull and exhaust fittings.
3-Use a white, 3mm pinstripe (same width as the wood)  to cover the old white wood and I can trim it to match the original wood edges). This will take some careful work to get each piece exactly straight, but the pinstripe is easy to remove and shift location.

Once something is done with the deck, the hull will be glassed using a 0.75 OZ cloth and West Marine 105/207. This should (?) them make appear part of the planking and not added on.

Any thoughts or better advice would be welcomed. Still having issues resizing pictures, or I would attach a few.Thank you.

You could try re-planking the deck. Using a dark wood. There is a method used for caulking, where card is glued to the edges of the plank. You could use white card.

Pinstriping is usually quite thick.   Many layers of clear finish will be needed to diguise the difference.   Unfortunatly 'Letraset' seems to be no longer available as that was much thinner.   Do any of the lettering manufactuers do a thin tape?

The pinstripe idea sounds good to me, plus it is non-invasive, if it doesn’t work, just peel it off. If you buy from a vehicle graphics supplier you can buy some heavier grade vinyl to use as a guide to give non-wavy curves. As to photos, I send them to myself in an email and they are automatically resized and post easily (thanks to other forum members for that tip)
Good luck.

All professional graphics suppliers can supply extremely thin vinyl.

Thanks for the replies.
BrianB6, the latest professional grade pinstriping is very thin, from what I read. I have some 3mm wide on order.

Hotglove, Yes, I agree that it is the this is the easiest way to start. I think I can make it look good.
This whole thing started with a new in box but old Equipage Riviera 80 I paid very little for. Taking it out of the box, I could see why it was not too popular. I had a box of RC parts (Graupner Speed 700BB, etc) and wanted to make this a nice RC boat, rather than a display. After much sanding, a couple of split planking repairs, etc, I'm getting closer. If I can get the holly look back to the deck, I have cloth and epoxy to seal the exterior. Then seal the insides, which are a mess as well.
Thanks for the tips on resizing the pics. I'll try to do asap!

Hi I had an additional problem with posting pics, my Mac labelled images as jpeg. Mayhem would not accept them, then another member explained that all I had to do was to edit the Suffix Jpeg by simply deleting the letter "e"
Now I simply rename pics, email to myself and save in a "boatpics online" file.
I have found a decent pinstripe product at a local model shop which is a roll of pin striping  of varying width, it is a bit thicker than I would like but a good thing to have to help choose the right width for a task.
I used a local graphics firm to do a job on my car and have found him a very useful contact, one advantage of talking to a professional like him is that I have scrounged a few offcuts, the other is that he can source so many colours, a light ivory/beige for example might look more pleasing as a deck caulk than brilliant white.
There is another alternative where a contrasting stripe is required and the deck is plain dark wood, if the plain deck is in good condition one could order some clear vinyl wrap with the chosen pinstripe, at the chosen spacing, already applied. This way you get perfectly spaced stripes in extremely thin vinyl and a perfect, high-gloss finish that allows the existing wood grain to show through.
Modern vinyl wrapping materials have come a long way since Fablon, my graphics guy has recently started doing kitchens, with some pretty amazing results.

Back in my aeromodelling days I used to use Great Planes striping tape. It was very thin, came in various widths, and the adhesive cured after a few days to become almost impossible to remove, and it seemed impervious to the engine exhaust oils. I still have some, and have used it as boot topping on some of my model boats, as well as for other applications and, even after more than 10 years, it's still in place and looking as good as the day it was first applied. I bought mine via mail order from Tower Hobbies.
