Destroyer paint colours
« on: June 26, 2018, 08:11:50 pm »

Hi I'am building a Hunt class destroyer
and I believe it was painted in one or more of the following colours
G5,G10,G15
G20,B30
G45,B55
B15
I dont have a clue as to what these colours are. Does any one know what these equal to in Tamiya or Humbrol colours as I only have black and photos to go off

According to my 'British and Commonwealth Warship Camouflage of WWII' book the refs are:
G5, Grey Black Soot
G10, Dark Grey, also known as battleship grey
G15, not listed
G20, Dark Green
B30, Dark Olive
G45, Green (light olive)
B55, mid grey
B15, Blue Black

I'd recommend this book, as it's got 7 pages of different Hunt class paint schemes from different times / theatres etc, here's a pic of just one of the pages

These might help but you'll probably get some conflicting opinions about shades and hues.

A somewhat related question. My father had input from several survivors of the sinking of G07 HMCS Athabaskan about paint colours at that point in the (short) life of theship. The model was damaged and I need to repaint it now after repairs. Is there a way to reverse engineer the paint from the model itself? My dad is sadly long gone :-(

believe it or not, but I believe that both B and Q AND Halfords can now scan a colour on a scanner and match the colour from an item............would mean you take in your model so i'd check with either outlet first.

Unfortunately that would require a trip across the pond as well :-) But I will check a local paint store here.

bearing in mind that printers over the pond are behind the uk ones, you can take the model to a printers and they should have a colour scanner to  take a sample. it will scan the original colour and break it down into cmyk or rgb. both will do

RN colour schemes is a complex subject with different ranges of paint colours used at different times during WW2

Jamie Duff of Sovereign Models has done a lot to try to simplify what is known and recently published this chart of what was used with what and when (and also offers tins of paint to match):

Which ship and what sort of date is it meant to be?  I can check against my copy of the Hunt class Man of War book to see if it is covered there.

regrettably Mal's sense of colours is wrong.

G5, Grey Black Soot > Dark grey
G10, Dark Grey, also known as battleship grey
> dark grey yes, not Battleship Grey, also known as 507B and 507A. The only difference being the reflectance.
G15, not listed > no such colour.
G20, Dark Green B30, Dark Olive, actually a Blue Grey
G45, Green (light olive), a grey not green. The formula to make it has no green pigment in it. Also known as 507C.
B55, mid grey > B stands for Blue and it is a light blue with a reflectance of 55%
B15, Blue Black > no a definite blue with a reflectance of 15%

As a book on camouflage, it makes a good place to stand your coffee.

Apparently G5 and G15 are identical according to an offshoot from the HMS Hood Association.

Hi
When I built my Type 2 I used the following Humbrol paints. For the HullDark Grey 6y, Light Grey 64 and Matt Black 33. For the deck Blue Grey 79. Superstructure Light Grey 64 and the hull anti-fouling White Ensign paints WW2 RN hull red. Don't know how accurate they are but it looks good to my colour blind eye

HMS EASTON L09 type lll about 1943

That particular ship is not shown in the Man Of War book although a couple of other Type III Hunts that commissioned around the same time are.  The Wright book does have a scheme for Easton claiming to be around then but its credibility is low as one of the colours is given as "1941 Blue"  which seems extremely unlikely for a ship first commissioned in late 1942.  Do you have many photos of Easton that could be used to compare with others that are better documented?

My Type 2 is HMS Puckeridge which was built from a limited edition Sirmar kit and at 1/48th scale is nearly six feet long

Are you putting the photos on a third party host site and linking from there?  I use Village Photo.

Looking at the attached photo, Easton looks to be in an intermediate scheme as shown in the 1943 edition of CB3098. In that case, you will need G5, G10, B15 and G45 from Sovereign Hobbies.  https://www.sovereignhobbies.co.uk/collections/royal-navyy
