  • Model Boat Mayhem is Great!
It's been a while...
« on: August 25, 2018, 10:22:07 pm »

How do again all, Fate has once again conspired to make me work in unfamiliar parts of the country several days a week, and i think I'm going to be around st albans midweek for a few months. I gather the public can sail models on verulamium park boating lake, but not between april and august due to on-site bird nesting. I also gather that the local boat club meets there on a sunday, but no use to me im afraid as im weekdays only. Anyone recommend a sailing site in easy striking distance of hemel /st albans with evening access and [ideally] close by [e.g. pond side in a perfect world] parking please ? Many thanks in advance.

Hello thehay95, I am Hon Sec of the club that sails on the lake there is no time restriction on using the smaller boating lake.  You can sail any time of the year.

Obviously there is due regard to wildlife but lately the depth has varied because of the dry weather.  OK at the moment.  We shall be there tomorrow sailing which according to the forecast is going to be a nice day.

The large lake has been a default place to sail yachts etc but various council agreements get changed every time there is an election.  I have a letter allowing us to sail since 1988 but they keep changing their mind a long with the wind direction!
The latest proposal for the sailing lake is to assist us by planting shrubs all the way round, the mind boggles!  Apparently this will stop the leaves blowing into the lake!

Best not to sail i/c powered boats as this would set us back and start a fresh set of 'PC'' s on our backs.

If you visit you will note there is a gently shelving area which makes it shallow for 20 % of the lake area.
Parking in the main car park is easy mid week and you will have to walk down to the lake about 6 or 7 minutes,
Best of luck,
Roy
