Graupner Bow thruster leak
« on: July 19, 2019, 04:19:46 pm »

Hi there, I am looking for some advice before I go ahead and break it.
I have recently installed the thruster in my tug but it leaks from the cover plate which is screwed to the impeller housing by 3 bolts.  The kit did not come with a washer, the photos do not show a washer and the instructions only show the unit fitting into the hull.  Should I be putting some sealent in before tightening it up, or do I just tighten the bolts till it stops leaking or strips the thread ??

Hmm, seems a bit crude set up if it's the ones shown on their website. You'd have thought an o ring or gasket might have been used. I'd personally try a smear of vaseline on the surface first. Says on the website to fit it vertical as well which seems a bit odd if all the access is through the bottom blanking flange. How much to tighten a screw in a plastic thread, well I'm never very sure.

Hi RST, I will try the vaseline this afternoon. If it works it would be the easyest solution. Stuart

Jut interested to know how you get on.
JohnV:  A rubber seal is listed on the parts lists and diags, but in the opposite location of the OP's problem as they described so just interested how it pans out.
Cheers,
Rich

Sorry for the delay, I had a fight to get the cover off. On the bottom of the unit and in the narrowest part of the model, I had to shorten the allen key to get it to fit.
I put the grease on the cover and put it back in place.  I now had the problem of tightening the screws. Realy hard to get them finfer tight, and a 1/4 turn at a time, once I got the key in, took forever.
With the furthers in and hardest to get to I used a pair of small long nosed pliers to take up the slack before tightening up with the allen key.
Problem now is I think I over tightened with the pliers as the screw just keeps turning with the key.
The other 2 are tighi but I think I have stripped the 3rd.
Putting it on the shelf for now because I will need the think about this.

Hi Stuart
Take the bull by the horns and cut a hole in the deck above the thruster just as they would do in real life and screw a small cover plate over the hole.this will give you good access to the thruster.

Hi there, Not sure why but I decided to float test the model. 4Hr yesterday and 2 hrs today, floating and running the unit and not a drop of water. Despite my nerves it looks like it is sealed.

Many thanks
