Remember the NRM has an 'outstation' about 60-70 miles north up the A1(M) at Shildon, Co. Durham.

They have a large, modern 'trainshed' there with many more exhibits, including the Deltic prototype and the gas turbine APT-E, which I worked on back in the 70s.

And still would now if they let me.....  :((

One of the best museums in the country. I reckon that the 'lost luggage warehouse' look of some of it is the best bit.

I was more into military stuff when I was younger but trains interested me too, the Mallard stood out to me because of its smooth streamlined look and then the aggressive show of the power train underneath.

I have been fortunate enough to visit the UK on three occasions, in 1993, 1997 and 2008. Each time I have made a point of going to the NRM, as railways, and British railways in particular, are a passion of mine. On my last visit, in 2008, Flying Scotsman had been reduced to a kit of parts, as it was undergoing a major overhaul. Having seen it when she was in Australia in 1988, it was fascinating to see this famous loco in pieces. I have also been tp STEAM, the GWR museum in Swindon, Wilts. The first time we went to Swindon, in 1993, the GWR museum was housed in an old church in the Faringdon Road. It subsequently moved to its current location in part of the old GWR workshop, where many famous locomotive classes of the old GWR were built.

The photos bring back happy memories, thank you Martin.

Hi I found the Swindon museum was OK, but maybe we are spoilt for these things?
I have been to the railway museum of New South Wales and enjoyed that, as by chance we were there for the start of the steam engine train trips.  They were filming that day so I may even be on screen in the background.

There are not many places you can go and see 2 Beyer Garrett locos, one you could get up close to and the other in the (locked) engine shed.  Later my son went on a trip with the B-G in steam at the head.
The French national railway museum was good that is in Mulhouse (moo-loos), but completely overshadowed by the car museum, I do not think there are more cars gathered together in a museum anywhere else in the world.  On top of that it is a beautiful place with lighting based on street lights on one of the French bridges across the Seine

Roy

What a fantastic glimpse into the world of engineering, brilliant designs and skills and dedicated people
who restored them, utterly awe inspiring. Thank you for posting them.

Reference my post above about the NRM's Locomotion out-station, here's some pics of some notable exhibits there, mostly of the APT-E of course, not that I'm biased.  :-)

In the last pic, which is interior of the APT's Trailer Car 2, that's my seat right at the far end.  ok2

On our last visit to the UK, in 2008, we saw 60007, "Sir Nigel Gresley", working on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. It's interesting to see it reduced to a kit of parts. On an earlier visit, I think it was 1993, we saw 60500 "Green Arrow" similarly dismantled.

Hi Peter, back in the day there was a small group (4) who used to organise a railway day out.  I organised one to Birmingham for a 'loco experience'.  At lunch my mate Jim and I went on a wander and found 60007 (Sir Nigel) sitting quietly with a keep off sign.

I was never going to get this chance again and we got up onto the footplate which is enormous and looked around.  We sidled down the passage in the tender for change of shift drivers and had 20 mins I will not forget.

We also had 20 mins each driving the Castle Class loco Defiant, 5040 renamed from Ogmore Castle after WW2.  We fired and drove an 0-4-0 loco all good fun plus a few other things.  It was £100.00 each and well worth it, however no where to wash so went home rather dirty!

That was back in 1990/1.

I used to see Ellerman Lines thundering through the Surbiton railway cutting many times in the 60s, often hauling the ACE and other named trains. My school was just across the road above the cutting so lots of opportunity to watch Southern Steam in action.

Well the wheels do tend to start coming off as you get older... :-)
