Double flying fun for under £100
« on: October 21, 2020, 07:36:46 pm »

Both of these models, complete with a radio each come in under £100 for both. The helicopter is a Wltoys/Wltech V911s, flybarless helicopter with gyro stabilisation. It is a lovely little helicopter that flies very nicely and for a decent time on a 3.7v 300mah cell. It self levels if you let go of the right stick. It seems quite twitchy at first, this could be adjusted but its best to learn to be gentle on the sticks as it is capable of smooth movement with some practice. Its main motor is an 8.5mm x 20mm brushed coreless motor. Tail rotor is driven by a 6mm x 16mm motor. I chose this model as it was flybarless which I think looks much better. And it was cheap. I paid £32.75, I have seen them lower than this since I got mine. It comes with one battery but has a 2 port usb charger with it. Well happy I bought it. I have spent loads on twin coaxial and flybar equiped helicopters over the years, this one is best I have flown so far. I had a morley mx ranger but I was a bit scared while I was flying it, being about 600 quids worth back then. Tipping over on the ground cost me another 50 on top of that. 4 foot rotor certainly made a mess of itself, bending the 8mm main shaft. I have clipped a few things in my shed and round the house with the little heli, but no damage to the heli or furniture. Highly recommend this for indoor and outdoor fun.  Details of the radio setup/prices for my midknight design above are detailed in my tiny delta post.

One of my friends is totally uninterested in RC stuff, but even he was impressed with the little heli, even spoke about getting one. I sent him a link so see what happens. I am enjoying the heli, probably up to 30 full battery flights now, no crashes yet, touch wood. Had a couple of clacky clacky moments landing too close to stuff, but thats it. No glitches so far. Glad I bought it. Indoor and outdoor fun for relatively low price. If I could fly one of my F949 boards in a suitable plane indoors, I would, but the heli is a good substitute for now. I painted my main and tail rotor tips yellow to see the edge of the rotor discs when landing close to obstacles. I think it looks better. I am thinking about painting the bodyshell too, will maybe get to that at some point. It could look a lot better with a decent paint scheme. I did think about making a Jetranger bodyshell but it would need to be built on the heli. It would be fiddly though, it was hard enough making my 3 foot long quadcopter powered version, this one would be about 1/4 the size. Video link below. https://youtu.be/bZZhrCeOs9w

The main motor failed on the little helicopter after probably 40 flights. I bought 4 motors which arrived last week, these were intended for plane use but I used one of them in the little heli. The brass gear on the dead motor was heated with a lighter and it slipped off easily and onto its new motor. The original heli motor was held in its mount by silicone, I used a small strip of fibreglass packing tape to fix the new motor in place.
The heli is now fixed and flying as it should.
I dont know if the original motor in the heli failed early due to my crashes or if they have a fairly short life. Anyway, a £2.50 motor replacement has done the trick and got my little heli airworthy again.
