Thanks Brian  :-))   This is going to sit on a shelf in my workshop  :-)

I've started working out the planking for the starboard side only.  First is the garboard plank which is the first plank off of the keel.  It's not flat in profile it is curved which presented a challenge but it went ok.

Next was the long job of lining out the planking - Now I know that not everyone does this but I always think that if I can draw it I can make it.  I wanted the planking to be representative of the drawings so I spent the best part of 3 days doing this.  I now know where every plank will go and its size.  I have one stealer plank at the stern which is straight off of the garboard plank and one drop plank towards the bow.

So now its time to cut some planks which vary in thickness and get on with the job at hand

Cheers Mark

Wow, so far that is the best planking I have ever seen on a model. Your skill is amazing... :-)) :-))

Hi mate  - I really hope that the wood looks as good as the tape  {-)   If it does I'm onto a winner!!

Thanks for the votes of encouragement - I am starting to make some progress but it's very slow.  I am having difficulties getting the planks to bend around the stern and into the rabbet tightly.  The planks are 3.2mm thick and 10mm wide and I have been experimenting how to do this so that it looks good.  I've split more planks in this area than I can remember  {-)

I think I've finally got a solution now and hopefully have some more pictures up soon.

Hi Mark, I presume you have tried steaming ,well more like boiling the plank ,the only draw back with that method could be discoloration of the plank ????,cheers  :-))

Hi Brian - yes mate I've tried steaming, boiling, microwaving, hot air and also raising the moisture content by soaking for 24 hours.  The bend where the planks wrap around the transom up to the wing transom is extremely tight and also compounds at the same time.  So the only way I could find of making the wood do this was to laminate the plank into two thinner strips.  This then brings on the additional problem of making them exactly the same when actually the precise shape isn't known until they fit.  I'm on a bit of a learning curve but it's getting better and easier by the day  :-)) :-)) .  Its testing but fun too!

Hi Mark, sounds like you are on the right track there, have had to laminate the ribs in 2 pieces at times in the hollow heal when they have had a sharp curve ( and still steam) a friend of mine will use up to 5 lamination's on the ribs at times to skirt around the steaming of them. cheers. :-)) .

Hi all

Sorry that I've not updated this build for some time but I cannot get into my workshop.  We are having loads of work done on our home which is taking longer than we would ever of imagined.  So my workshop is pretty much storing half of our home - It should all be finished in October and then I'll be back on it.

Thanks Mark

October??!!  That's a long time for us to hold our breath!  Don't you have a dining room table?  %% %%

Looking forward to when you get your workshop back - but probably not as much as you are.

I do but the wife says no and I don't blame her either.  We started with a new bathroom which has been delayed many times due to trades letting us down.  My workshops due to be changed at the same time but we can't do that either as the new bathroom is waiting in there!!  I just have to be patient but it's not easy.

Nice to hear from you both  :-)

Your talent is unsurpassed Mark. Plus one here for wanting to see the end result of the planking.

Just beautiful work!!

Hi Phil - Thanks mate the little ship is still in dry dock.  I am so frustrated that I cannot get to her to get some work done.  As soon as I can I'll update this build.

Mark,
Do you know how they bent the planks on the full size ship, it must have been a nightmare, but maybe ( just maybe ) you could do a scaled down version
I am intrigued

Hi Phil - On the original ship all of the planks were spiled - or if you like cut to shape to fit rather than straight planks.  I have done exactly the same on this model as otherwise the bending makes them step away from the frames.  They will not lay flat without spiling and how they did this back in the day is incredible.  So much has been lost over the years that many ship building operations are pretty much guessed at nowadays.

They would also have been steamed on an industrial scale - I can only imagine just how hard it must have been.  If I was building this ship again I would have planked the outside first and the inside after.  Clamping between the frames would have been so much easier.  As I understand it on the real ships the shipwrights would lay the thick stuff inside and the binding strakes to give the hull strength. The outside would then be planked and the rest would follow.

I'm really hoping to have my workshop back sometime at the beginning of October - I'm missing not building it keeps me grounded to be honest.

Hi David - I've been following your build as you know and what an engineering project yours has become - amazing!!!

OK - I've been out of the game for months due to a very disreputable bathroom fitter who left me in a mess.  I'm a truck driver so only spent 2 days at home a week so it's been up to me to get all of the problems sorted.   Added to this the cheeky fellow has decided to go legal on me even though I paid him a fair rate for what he did.

Anyway enough of that - I've just about got everything done and the workshop has had a revamp too - well quite a major revamp.

I literally cannot wait to get back to my favourite pastime and I'm only a couple of weeks away so hopefully I will have an update soon.  I've really missed it and also the calm in our home.  I have been sneakily watching all of the other builds on here though  %%

Bathroom renovations always turn to custard! Over time and over budget, then every excuse in the book.

If he's gone legal on you I hope you've got plenty photographs of the carnage he's left.

Really looking forward to you getting back to your build.  I'm in awe of what you're creating.

Wow thanks all - I won’t go into detail but yeah it’s all documented. Ironically we employed this person to save me the trouble but as always it takes twice as long to put someone else’s job right.

I’ve got to the point where in my own mind it’s just about done so that’s good enough for me. I just can’t wait to get back to my little ship  :-)

Back at it at last  :-)) :-)) :-))   I cannot start to explain just how nice it is to be ship building again.  I've even managed to upgrade my workshop too!

Ok so onward with the planking of the hull - The planks start at 3.2mm thick and gradually reduce to 2.4mm at the keel.

The iron nails installed

Making more treenails and the installation

Then a final sand a a very light coat of shellac sanding sealer

Some of the joints do leave a bit to be desired but on the whole I like the finished result.  I could have made life easier by reducing the thickness of the planks but I wanted to stay true to the model.

I should not have used black archival ink either for the joints as it just looks too stark in contrast.  Next time I'll either use brown ink or HB pencil which should look better and hide my dodgy carpentry.

I did get some damage along the way and I need to repair the counter timbers and remake the taff rail stantions.

The new stantions which I knocked up today on the mill

So the next steps are to carry out the repairs, cut the limber channel and shape the frame spacers on the port side and make a heavy duty keel clamp.  I should have made this before and it would have saved the damage.

Thanks for the patience - Mark  :-))

We are our own worst critics.  The joints all look fine from here.  The whole model is exquisite!

Thanks for sharing with us.

Hi Greg - hope all is well with you?

Yes you are right - I remake far too many parts for no reason other than my own critique  %%

I think I need to chill out more - Mark  :-)
