Pin Pusher/Nail nailer
« on: December 18, 2020, 01:33:07 pm »

Anyone recommend an alternative way of getting pins into planks?
The Amati pin pusher or what ever its called is rubbish and very hit or miss there must be an easier way of putting pins thru planks to secure them to the ribs of the boat
Thanks
Fred

I've always used thin nosed pliers to hold the pin/nail and a small hammer. when driving the pin home I cover the pin head with the body of the pliers to prevent the hammer marking the planks.

Doesn't it really depend on what you're trying to fix into?

I like using a micro drill in the dremel to make a pilot hole , especially if I am fixing into a plywood frame . for a 0.7mm pin I use a 0.6mm drill then push it home with the long nose pliers . Those little drills are pretty cheap and if you keep your hand steady you will not break too many.  On my current build a pack of 10 got me through 3,000 pins

I must be honest - I've tried pins and really didn't like them at all.  I found that they damage the wood and you have to pull them out anyway because they make sanding difficult.  I prefer now to either clamp the planks or use magnets to hold them.
