Metal Clay
« on: February 04, 2021, 10:00:52 pm »

Has anyone ventured into the use of metal clay for making small deck fittings ?   The product comes like a sort of plasticine material, it is basically a clay metal compound which can be shaped, moulded, pressed out by a die to any shape you want .  You just make your piece 10% larger than the finished required to allow for shrinkage. Small pieces can be fired  (After allowing to dry ) using a small gas torch. The material ignites and after about 10 mins on full heat (cherry red) you have a brass (also copper , silver ,gold , bronze.) solid metal fitting which needs a bit of cleaning up with a wire brush to de-scale.
If anyone has tried it I would like to know how you got on .

Anything that big you could not fire with a micro torch. A 50 gm packet is about the weight of a domestic desert spoon.  Quite a lot of cleats and fairleads

Noticed it needs kiln firing at c800deg plus for 30mins.  Is that better than other methods -what problem does this solve please?

Know this material and mostly seen it used for jewelry making.. If not cured properly in the 800-1200 deg C kiln it is very brittle and friable

Probably cheaper to make a prototype, make a silicon mold and  use epoxy resin and metal pigments

Hi, If using silicon to make a mould make sure that it is compatible with the material you are going to use to fill it. I once made a master, vacuumed the silicon, made the mould and put to one side. A week down the line, still not set. Problem was the reaction between the metals of the master and silicon. What a costly mess. nemesis
