Build with me the Speedline Tamar 1/12 16-27
« on: April 10, 2021, 09:21:59 pm »

Hello All,

I've just bought the hull, wheelhouse and deck of a Tamar to start a build, . wondering if anyone can help me with some parts like the window frames and the trim tabs?

Thanks

Never built a lifeboat myself but quite happy to tag along - good luck with your venture and hope all goes well for you  :-))

Thanks to John, Sven and Canterbury Coxswain ive managed to secure plenty of pictures and also plans etc for the Tamar, Im awaiting the kit now and also the arrival of lots of tools and other bits to start my build, I think ive decided on building her in recognition of the final Tamar at the Mumbles "16-27" the "Roy Baker IV", We have spent quite a bit of time around that area holidaying in the UK.

Could a moderator or admin please chage the tile of my thread to "Build with me the Speedline Tamar 1/12 16-27"

I think I saw Tamar plans amongst other RNLI boats on eBay this morning. Thought they weren't allowed to be sold openly but I'm only picking that up from internet chat.

Thanks, I actually got a full set from the heritage guys at the RNLI this morning on pdf, I've had them rescaled to 1/12 and should be here tomorrow printed out.

Ive put a very good bid in so hopefully I'll win them.

I've got an unused Model Slipway Drumbeat of Devon on its way to me in one of our trucks from work, that was going to be my first boat but I think she will end up being sold to pay for the Tamar.

Had my plans from the RNLI resized to 1/12 scale, might have underestimated the size of this beast!! Thats the plans below laid out on a king size bed in a spare room.

OK! So today ive also ordered the decals from Mike Davies, the power train / esc's and batteries. Ive also had a plethora of tools arrive for pipe bending etc.

What i have also bought is a second 1:12 Tamar Speedline 80% complete kit, this has given me most of the casting and TWO sets of windows, so i shall plan on selling the second hull, deck, wheelhouse and windows.

I also want to say many thanks for the DVD jam packed full of pictures to Kim, That is going to be no end of help when it comes too all the details.

I think next week as everythign starts to arrive its going to be time to lay everything out, and make a plan of action! Oh and get in some practice at bending brass tube and then soldering it, totally new black art to me is that.

My Tamar is on the way, well the Hull, deck and wheelhouse are! The rest of the full Speedline kit will be coming in the next few weeks as Tony has now taken over Speedline and offering full kits again (this is going to be epic for Lifeboat enthusiasts)

Meanwhile ive been collecting parts i need and looking at plenty refence materials.

Nothing much to report other than my hull has arrived this morning! Wheelhouse and other bits ive ordered should be here tomorrow, then just got to wait for Tony to get the rest of the kit together for me and then we start this long build! Cant recommend Tony enough, he has been absolutely brilliant and the moulding is just superb.

Im hoping my motors will be here tomorrow along with the ESCs, the batteries are on back order and coming from hobbyking global warehouse along with a charger, in the meantime I have been practicing my soldering and tube bending etc ready for the rails and gantry.

Well, the build has to start somewhere  O0
It's a good idea to seal the bare wood - if you haven't already that is?

It certainly does Ray, I have sealed it after this picture as this was just "placed" in before sizing etc.

Ah yes, as usual that's me jumping the gun  :embarrassed:

... but, I guess it's better than staying silent... Good to know you've sealed the wood anyway  :-))

I'll take all the hints and tips anyone cares to throw at me! New adventure for me this.

Ive just got some Carrs Green flux and 188 solder, what a difference that makes when soldering compared to "other" types i have tried, so clean and tidy, although its left a residue of some sort on the brass, but its only some test pieces.

Grandmother, eggs, teaching.....just a reminder clean off flux residue ( using washing up liquid and wash sponge with the green scrubbing bit.......not stolen from the kitchen sink), also "cup alloys" do some really great cleaning products..... :-)) :-))
