What Colour is Cheddar Green?
« on: November 28, 2021, 09:54:27 am »

Hello all, long time since I've posted but I'm after some advice please. I'm getting nearer my goal of collecting an example of each model of Cheddar Models steam plants & locomotives, and am planning to build a few steam plants up over the Christmas holidays. To do so I've some engines I need to paint and I'd like to do them in the green that Cheddar Models used after the maroon, but I've no idea what green it should be. Can anyone advise me as to what green Cheddar used for their engines please/what would be a suitable alternative in rattle can form?

From Jerry...

"The original acrylic stove enamel colour was Light Brunswick Green, then we went over to Mid Brunswick Green when we brought out the slide valve garden rail locos. The light green is a sod to colour match I’m afraid, so it would be a take an engine with you scenario."

I can't find either in 'rattle can' so shall take an engine along to our local Halfords and try and find a decent match.

I'm also looking for gloss heat resistant white paint for funnels - I currently use matt and it holds dirt due to the matt finish. Looking like I'm going to have to send them off for powder coating I think. Any other suggestions?

I've always tended to go for cheap rattle cans for car paint, perhaps I ought to go upmarket and buy some nice enamel paint like that. Paint is something I've no idea about - do I need to do anything different with enamel spray than cheap car paint?

Why risk it Jim?, unless you know your chosen el-cheapo rattle-can paint won't discolour  >>:-(

VHT products are good for 200 degrees C [with the correct primer]

Ford SP1-21? is not correct, but looks pretty close

I may have confused things with my second question about VHT paint - that was to source some gloss VHT white paint for funnels, which it looks like you've found.

Do you mean SP1-31 or 51, I can't see a 21. I suspect one is close to the light green and one close to the dark green, so could be a good one to try. Personally, I've never had issues with el-cheapo paint on engine (not boiler) components, but would be better to use something I can trust!

Jim
Humbrol Enamel, Brunswick Green No 3 is the nearest that you will get to Cheddar original green.
I use it on all my engines, one coat grey primer and two coats No 3 enamel,  Humbrel white enamel is O.K. for funnels but will thro' time go yellow.

Humbrol enamel can be had to brush from e-bay or Hobbycraft in 5 ml or 50ml tins, I never use rattle cans.

Sorry for the typo Jim

It was SP1-31............0-10156-00131-9 was the full code

I have used VHT gloss black on a boiler which is excellent, however keep BRASSO off the brass bands as the Ammonia will tend to dull the gloss

I have also used Humbrol RED enamel for a boiler steam stop valve rotary handle......& it dulled to a browinsh purple within a few heats

So that was my only experience with Humbrol & heat

Humbrol has been banished from my household for a good number of years now so can't comment but:
A few years ago I could not service the 4-pot brake calipers on my Celica GT4.  After all sorts of attempts including roasting hot with a flame, boiling in hot water, dunking in diesel to release the cylinders inside, pretty much the only thing that survived was the smoothrite paint on the calliper body.  And I do mean I roasted the caliper to oblivion with a direct hot rosebud for many minutes as much I dared before melting the aluminium and the smoothrite just shrugged it off!
I used to paint various car parts with expensive and specific VHT but they tarnished.  Many a time I stripped them off, re-painted in smooth-rite and never had a reason to look at them again as they took acid cleaners also when the VHT didn't like them.  I don't know what is in hammerite's formula but their smootrite is great stuff.  No doubt it changed since, but I've not used any VHT branded paints for a while now as smoothrite seemed to last better.  It might be worth a try for you?

VHT paints are very good indeed, but the range of colours is limited. I have only used their black paints on bikes, with good results.

Thankyou chaps! I'll get some paint ordered and give a few of the suggestions a try and see what best matches my other engines.

In the meantime I've been making baseplates and pipework for my Pipit and Kompact engines today - just need to add the Pipit generating set to the collection to finish that part of the collection now. A few finishing touches and then they can be stripped apart for painting.

George, just to say I bought a tin of your recommend paint the other day and it appears a good match for the later Cheddar green.

Still hunting for a match for the earlier, lighter green.

Quite, I love the maroon colour, however I'm trying to collect an example of every Cheddar Models engine to form a sort of museum/archive and would like to keep the engines in their correct colours where possible.

Showed a friend of mine who lines traction engines for a living and he happened to have a tin of Pale Royal Green from the Craftmaster range with him. Quite a good match don't you think...
