Clubb 500 Porpoising
« on: June 06, 2022, 12:08:11 pm »

Hi Folks, for a bit of fun and not to race Im altering a Club 500 egine etc. Issue is that even with the normal supplied motor the boat can at full speed porpoise.
How can I rectify this porpoising action especially at higher speeds.
Many thanks

Hi Neil

Generally move weight forward will fix the problem.

I have the same problem with mine. When I get round to it I will be moving the battery forward a bit.

Another 500 Question if I may, When racing the " M " course Anti- Clockwise,   the left hand corners go fine but the one Righthand one, it seems to dig in and slide on its RH side, any solutions chaps ?.

Thanks.

They all porpoise, and they all chine walk round corners. As far as I know there is no solution while keeping it standard, we have a race league at our club and I’ve seen them endlessly doing both of these…

Club 500's porpoise, the further you can get the weight forward the less they porpoise, but once you have half a dozen boats going round they bounce like a 'jack in the box' no matter what you do.
Club 500's dont like to turn right, but easing off a little so the hull settles & progressively turning the rudder will encourage it to turn right, even so it will still bite you a few times each race. Also consider your line around the top right mark, wide in tight out will allow you to take a more sweeping right turn around the middle mark, but it will still bite you.
They also cavitate for no apparent reason half way down a straight & spin out on left handers sometimes, but their unpredictability just adds to the fun.

In my case of Jupiter -550(21.6 inches long)that once suffered from a heavy porpoising at speed,I attached trim tabs to get
the bow down, by which the boat came to run with less porpoising.

Take a look at the videos for just a reference.

Hi

Yes, that is one option that I've heard works.

The Club 500 has it's own class for racing though and no modifications are allowed. Fine if you are just using it for general boating though and some are fitted with brushless motors for that.
