Lubricate the inside of a water pump
« on: January 15, 2023, 03:05:28 pm »

Bonjour,
We are used to lubricating the piston pin of our water pumps from the outside and it can also be useful to do it from the inside thanks to this small accessory made by JMC.

This water pump lubricator will also allow the lubrication of the check valve.
The oil used is special grade 480 steam oil and will later be sent to the machine via the boiler. It will not dirty it, unlike limestone for example.

Precaution: Do NOT carry out this lubrication after each navigation, only before storing the steam plant for a long period.

Are you sure it is a good idea to have oil in the boiler?

Bonjour Calin,
I fully agree with you, it is not good in theory, but the purpose of this accessory is to do it some time to time with just a little drop before a storage for example and the quantity of oil used will be insignificant.

One thing to be aware of is the check valve balls will after a period time become out of shape, and will need changing. I, after a season steaming, check the valve balls and If all is well I use a small drop of 3 in 1 oil and store for the winter. I see the theory but I am not sure, oil in boiler, although a small amount. One other point in the system is the main steam control valve, it depends where it is placed (and here I speak from experience), my main valves are before the lubricator, and hence mostly (not now) forgotten, now they get attention.  :-))
