Hello from Indiana
« on: June 20, 2023, 06:06:36 pm »

Hello all, new to the site but not new to RC boats by any means.   Getting active again with my RC boats after getting burnout in my model train hobby.  So out come my tugs.   I have a pair of tugs, I cannot claim to have built them, but I did put a lot of TLC and new radio gear in both.  My first tug that I bought a few years ago is one of the grand daddies of big tug models.  The Mister Darby by Dumas Boats.   She is an older build, has the Dumas motors and gear reduction drive which still works perfectly.  I upgraded the nav lighting to LED's that are turned to look like marine lamps.  The mast was missing the lower enclosed part, I am working on fixing that issue thru a friend that has a 3d printer.   My second tug is a recent purchase in my local area, a Billings Zwarte Zee ocean going tug.  Pretty nicely built, just needing a new battery and upgraded RC gear.   I have it running, working on getting colored micro lamps to light up the nav lights.  Mike

I am looking at ordering the Saito Hercules tug kit, along with their boiler and 2 cylinder steam engine for my winter build.   I have a Dumas Army tug that I need to get back to building and finish that one.   A live steam powered tug is top of my list, I am just not a big kit builder anymore with the hours I work in the factory.    The Darby might be an old big lump but she is a workhorse on the water still.  I thought about a total refresh on her paint work, but she has that great "work a day tug" look to her now that just looks good.  I will finish the rework on the mast and replace the missing control cab for the crane operator.

Some time ago, a penpal of mine (from Indy), mentioned the excellent club for r/c boats in your state. Some good photographs on their website.
