Sealant for hatch covers
« on: August 01, 2023, 10:49:22 pm »

Hi lads my question relates to a membrane placed between the hatch cover and the deck to seal the hatch, but must be thin, what I have looked at is a neoprene strip 1 mm thick and 10mm wide it will need to be stuck down with an adhesive
The other I have looked at is a sponge strip self sealing 1.5 mm thick 10mm wide
Each hatch will be compressed to the deck
Does anyone have experience using these items or have another suggestion

How are you planning to hold them down?    :-)

How about gasket paper which is usually Petrol, Oil & Water Resistant... I'm thinking of using this for my main hatch cover which will be bolted into place.

Hi most cycle shops still sell valve rubber tubing.  I have this in use with vaseline in compression.  I used some (yacht) winches which I fitted with a screwed rod underneath and an angled clip which as you twist it compresses the hatch down.

Sand the top section of the hatch cover and the bottom where the hatch cover will be located.

Apply a very thing coating of Vaseline to the underside of the cover .

Then apply a bead of Clear or white bathroom / kitchen silicone sealer to the section thats the bottom section where the hatch top is fitted

Allow to cure then lift off the hatch and clean off all the Vaseline with white sprit.

Trim off the silicone and your have a seal that seals every bit including and wood grain.

You can also reapply a very very thin layer or a smear of Vaseline if you so wish.

The silicone will take on the shape and any imperfections to the underside of the hatch cover..

If you do want to go down the rubber gasket route you can buy A4 sheets off Ebay in various thicknesses which could be supplemented with the Vaseline.

Hi guys
I have sent for neoprene strip 1.5mm thick x 10mm wide in a 10m roll ( from Rubber Stuff ), it is compressible so will give it a try,I like Sonar idea and may give it a go if the strip fails .
In answer to Martins question all hatches will be bolted down
Will let you know how I get on
