Do you know what speed these motors run at.
What are you looking for in the motors?

you don't need huge motors in a 30 inch tug.
The important thing to work on is the thrust from the prop(s).
This can be done in 3 ways, increase pitch, speed or prop size.
Smaller geared motors can produce a lot of power, so can large direct drive.
Most scale boats work on scale size props, so this only leaves pitch and speed.
I have had a 30 inch single screw tug going way too fast on a 550 and 3:1 gearbox with a 2 1/2 inch prop all on 6 volts.
You can also try upping the voltage, but this will depend on your speed controller.
It is mostly down to which way you want to go.
I would suggest getting ideas from others that have your style of driveline, then go for whichever suits your voltage and speed controller(s).

To be honest mate there are so many different ways to go that it is difficult to just go for one solution.
I have had several boats of the same type but powered them all differently with the same result.
Just me being daft I know, but I do like powertrains, they are my "thing"

hi there you are talking about motor. are your props brass plastic etc how many blades etc. The resion i ask this is you can have the best motor in the world but the boat will be a poor runner if you have rubbish or wrong props , The prop is what transmits all your motor power. Think of a Ferrari with the old mine wheels it would be crap. John

Blimey,
A 30 inch model with 2 x 85mm props.
You will need them turning very slowly or she will just take off.

Gear boxes can be noisy, stick to larger size slow running motors, more torque. Alrger motor running on low power does not get hot like a small motor on higher power. Heat is wasted power. :)

See what I mean, 2 different solutions in the last 2 posts, both running well with no appreciable problems.
It really depends on how YOU want to go.

MiniSteve....his 30" tug is the Mk3 developed from the first mould?  O0 Its been cropped from the size of James (I have no friends) tug, down to your recomended 30 x 13".
There was a fair bit of lead ballast in the one you seen, hopefully need very little in the Mk3. Oh and Mr Megalomaniac there has some other surprises fitted too, but I'll tell you about then when he's finished pulling me all over the pond!!!!
Im struggling a wee bit with my own 'Black Ops' project, the planking is gving me grief, but once I get a layer of grp and matting on it should be fine. THREE of the large schottels on a 32nd scale RotorTug!!!!!

Hi Steve & Co....'Splash' has the first spirited away and is busily getting the internals sorted out, Norry is next up for the next pull from the mould and is batting ideas around...very,very big ideas! LOL  :D In the aftermath of  the meeting at Greenock in the summer, we are still finding guy on the lookout for something that will fit the tug towing bill.

Santa claus?.....Graupner Claus more like  O0

Hi Guys

I must admit until I got into Tugs, I would not think very much about how I power'd my models.

My latest the RT80 is driven by 3 schottchel units directly driven by 800 motors running on 6v, now that SHIMBO has got the hint for xmas (Futaba 6EZ 2.4ghz) I am confident that it will be in the water in the new year.
