Running on compressed air - lunrication?
« on: October 14, 2024, 05:38:24 pm »

I am just now learning about steam. I see many references to testing engines by running on compressed air. How is the engine lubricated without steam bringing in steam oil? Thank you.

Bonjour Tim,
Personally, I always fill at first my steam machines with a lot of thin oil (not necessarily steam oil) when I try them on air. Furthermore, I run them just a few minutes at low speed to check how they run then I operate them only on steam.

Thanks to this way of doing, I see this oil going out of the exhaust pipe, proof she made the expected lubricating job  :-))

I say it during my tests, the last one at 1'20" : https://youtu.be/oUcGz2JH4OY
If you have no thin oil, WD40 can be an alternative, I would like to point out that for steam operation I use a thick 430 grade oil.

Pretty much ANY oil will do when testing with air. Just squeeze a liberal amount of oil in the inlet of the engine before connecting.
Alternative, if you have access to a workshop where airdriven tools are used, they have "air lubricators there and using such a device in the air supply, there's nothing to worry about.

Don't hesitate to ask... The only question I cannot answer is: "how many steps are there on that ladder?", because I haven't reached the top yet...

Tim, there are no bad questions, only bad answers has said Albert Einstein and I fully agree with him !
