Any model boats in Northumberland
« on: May 28, 2024, 02:09:17 pm »

Hello

I have been searching for somewhere to use electric model boats in Northumberland, I want to build a Sea Queen but do not wish to commit and then find I can't use it. I have contacted Northumberland County Council but I think I must be stuck in an intray somewhere. I live near Alnwick but would be happy to travel within Northumberland. Any one in the area that knows of a suitable location? I did check the clubs site but we do not have any, the closest is Newcastle which becomes a longish round trip.

Cheers

Let me know if you find anywhere, my wife and I come up to Northumberland about once a year, our most recent trip was less than a month ago. Usually stay at Embleton. Be great to be able to bring a boat up and meet like minded folk there.

Electric powered model boats are sailed at QE2 lake just north of Ashington on a casual basis. There is a sailing/canoeing/windsurfing club on Ladyburn lake at Druridge Bay that may well accept a model boater as an associate - the Council website does mention a chargeable permit for water users:

Hi shar1982

Thank you! I had been scouring google maps and did see the QE2 lake but had no idea if it was used at all - I will definitely take a look as that is just a short drive from me. Ladyburn Lake would be superb - it is the main place I have enquired about in my letter to Northumberland district council. I would happily pay the boat fee as I would get a lot of use from it there. I'll post here if that is successful.
Thanks again for your help
Cheers

All that map shows is that there are no MPBA affiliated clubs in Northumberland! Hence the OPs question.

In fact, there are hardly any publicly accessible sailing waters in South-East Northumberland and the two that I did mention are within 20 minutes or so driving of the OPs location.

It's a bit of a trek from Alnwick, but the Borders Model Boat Club is based at at Gunknowe Loch at Tweedbank, near Galashiels. Usually meets on the first and third Sunday of each month. A friendly bunch. https://bordersmodelboatclub.yolasite.com/

Killingworth model boat club would be a lot closer than Tweedbank. They have a Facebook page you could check out.

Hi
Jonty, that looks like a great place to sail, as you say a little further than I would like but I would like to visit if I'm up that way.

Ralph, Killingworth would be OK occassionally but too far for regular outings. I'm hoping to visit when I have something built!

Many thanks for the suggestions, looks like QE2 Lake for now but I hope to get permission for Ladyburn lake.

I have been using my fast electrics at Sweethope loughs with permission from the manager of the area,

Its mainly a fishing lake but if there's no fisher men about he is fine with fast electrics, im sure for smaller quieter stuff if you enquired he would probably be okay with scale smaller stuff at any time.

Here are some of my fast elec's running at Sweethope

Unfortunately, there are no model boat clubs in Northumberland, I was a member of Tyne Mouth model boat club for quite a few years and travelled every Sunday morning from Widdrington Northumberland. A few lads used to sail on QE2 park on a Sunday morning but that was quite a while ago I’m not sure if they still go. I don’t know if the Killingworth club is still going. I go to Ladyburn Lake every day walking my dogs and in 18 years I’ve never seen any model boats on the lake, I would be very surprised if the Council agreed to your request to sail model boats as were would they draw the line on the type they would allow, model boats cover such a big range from sedate yachts to fast electric and petrol. When I was a member of Tynemouth club the members were covered with public liability insurance.

Hope this helps Brian
