Oh look - another new member
« on: September 27, 2024, 04:53:12 pm »

Good afternoon all.  After a very swift acceptance into the forum by the admin team, I am here to say 'Hello' and Fastyr mie.  I have been into model making and model boating for close to 50 years now.  Only now do I have the time' money and space to up my game in building.  After a recent trip 'across' to the 'adjacent Island' I managed to pick up a couple of bits for my winter builds.  A Neptune trawler hull (plans from Model Boats Magazine a good few years ago that I kept the plans and details for to this day), and a laser cut set for the Orca - which will need no explanation - I am sure.

I have on the bench an old sailing yacht that has been rescued from a local vintage store.  Most of this boat was either rotten or already turned to dust.  It's been repaired and being converted to RC.  It would have been lovely to keep it as it would have been, but it was getting like Trigger's Broom, so much needed to be replaced.

I have a Calypso in the boat yard.  Not built by me, but updated and worked on to get it to sit level, sail straight and not leak.  Work in progress - even now.  Matchbox 1/72 Corvettes a plenty over the years, now one on re-build and one still in the box, untouched.

There is a very active group over here (The Isle of Man) and I will be joining them over the coming months.  The chance to get out and about is most welcome.

Very much looking forward to the group content, the social media page and local social groups as I get back in to a long lost hobby again.

I'm new as well, Chris.  I got the model from my Dad who was an avid model plane builder and was trying a boat for the first time.  He got the hull started, to the point the rc components are all installed but then stopped building and put it into a box.  I am now retired and was a Naval Officer, so he gave it to me years ago.  It's now out of the box and I am going to do this as an homage to my Dad.

The wiring is a real challenge, but I think I have it figured out.  The plastic propellers were both broken, so I have replaced with 40mm M4 L/R brass.  They fit well and look great.  The rudder linkages are too loose, so have to figure out a way to get at them to tighten them down.   I have to figure out the modular approach to putting the model sections together so that I can get easy access to the internal workings after the model is completed.   There are some really good videos that I have found on line.   The AI queries are mind blowingly applicable, which is a real surprise. ;-)  I will be replacing the batteries, the servos seem to work well but the speed controller is a bit of a challenge.

How is your model coming?
