27 foot motor whaler fitted to Type 21 frigate
« on: January 11, 2025, 08:59:09 pm »

Talking to Justin at Fleetscale he told me there were 3 types of motor whaler. One had a short tiller, another with a long tiller and a third. So what do I need for a late 70’s/early 80’s ship? Post Falklands they were replaced by a RIB, Sea Rider I think with a Cheverton on the opposite (starboard) side.
Any idea and photos would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

Simon,

May be worth asking these gents ]https://type21club.org/

27' MOTOR WHALER Constructed from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) with wooden Gunwhales and powered by a small engine, The whaler was a reliable workhorse of the Royal Navy. It was mounted on davits on the starbord side of the ship. These lowered the boat to just above the sea whilst moving and then the command would be given to 'slip'. The Robinson's disengaging hooks were released by a crew member and the boat dropped into the seahttps://www.ambuscade.org.uk/am_sea_ops_boats.htm

Thank you David. I think this might be the third version as it’s fibreglass and the there is a short coaming over both the front and rear which I think might be absent from the previous two marks? I see this boat was part of Ambuscade’s equipment too. Really useful - thank you!
