Newbie to boating introducing myself - MattyB
« on: March 22, 2025, 02:23:41 pm »

Hi there, my name is Matt and I’m about to start my Rc boating career. Although I’m new to boating I have done a lot of Rc fixed wing fling since I was very small with my Dad. Unfortunately in 2024 I fell from my mountain bike and damageacarotid artery in my neck  and two weeks later the r that had formed there moved to my brain and I  experienced an ischemic stroke at age 44. And was the admitted under Blue Lights to Lister hospital in Stevenage and then was sent on to Addenbrookes for emergency brain surgery and spent around 4.5 months in the hospital system undergoing neuro- rehabilitation because my entire left side was affected - this  included re-learning how to walk again and how to use my left arm again! All in all I have recovered quite well and am back at work but am now epileptic and am in hospital following a seizure incident but they have got my meds dosage much better now so I am hopeful of returning home later today. Although I have not given up on flying Rc planes solo again in future at present my left hand is not good enough to do so safely so I can currently  only fly with my Dad on the buddy box who is then able to take over if I make an error hence I am interested in taking up boating which I should e able to do more independently. I am interested in sailing and the Club 500 racing that SMBC seem to run quite a bit over the summer and also I want to build some foamboard Ground effect vehicles (Ekranoplans which will bring me back close to my aircraft roots too.

Hi Matty, thats quite a lot to get over, i hope all goes well. Those models are fabulous to watch and great fun, they're based on the ekranoplans that ran on the black sea years ago. There's a guy called Ashley who contributes to the model boats magazine that has built them. The magazine also ran a feature on them years ago so if you have specific questions about building one hes the go to man and always willing to help. you'll find him on the model boats magazine forum Good luck.

I've started a new blog on my experience to help others - content will be posted roughly weekly on a Wednesday:
