Single explosion flash, is there a simple way?
« on: April 28, 2025, 04:16:09 pm »

I've sorted the movement, the smoke and the sounds but I'd like to get just a single flash to simulate a shell arriving on a decent sized model. The 1/16 tank gun ones are too small and I was thinking of a camera remote flash unit. Has anyone tried anything similar or created an alternative?
Many Thanks
Tony

Have you considered using a LED? They are available in many different sizes and colors.

I have something like one of these, in the bottom right of the pic in the link https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N1BNMZL/ref=sspa_dk_detail_3?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B07N1BNMZL&pd_rd_w=sTTxX&content-id=amzn1.sym.7446a9d1-25fe-4460-b135-a60336bad2c9&pf_rd_p=7446a9d1-25fe-4460-b135-a60336bad2c9&pf_rd_r=SFD46FRB0K4H9ZNHQARC&pd_rd_wg=2WNAL&pd_rd_r=b91aa5cf-f096-4f25-a4f8-7d606f1360fb&s=hi&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw . Very bright. USB powered. You would need to work out the switching (pulse), don't buy the type of USB LED with the touch switch.
If you mount it inside the gunwale, if you have them, then facing towards the superstructure.

What I thought might be suitable, and what I'm trying at present, is a small camera flash unit that I bought off e-bay for £1.74. It is a simple box unit about 3inches x 2.5inches x 1.5inches and runs off 2xAA batteries held in the box. So all included and it's a case of separating the 3 parts i.e. power, trigger system and bulb.

I wonder how easy it would be to make a power take off (PTO) circuit from your main battery circuit. That would make it easier to use the flash, once fitted.

I'm using, or rather trying to use, a non-latching switch and have moved the 3V supply away so the capacitor package is actually quite small. The other bit of the twin-switcher from Comp Shop is being used for a pair of smoke (mist) generators.It should, of course, be simple BUT............. {:-{
