4D modelshop is closing
« on: June 24, 2025, 05:40:22 pm »

Just read on the internet that 4D modelshop is closing.

Sadly, I have never used their shop before as i have always produced my own fittings so have never looked at their shop.

Sadly I have probably missed much, but i hope that those that have can make one last saving before they close next monday.

All the best to all at 4D modelling.

Very sad, they were always very helpful and friendly. I works suspect the new taxes have proved too much. A great loss

hi there
Just spoke to a lady on the telephone on Friday  from 4D shop and she informs me that one of the main reasons that the shop is closing has to do with the rates/grounds rents in London.  Also, something to do with BREXIT.
Sad loss they are.

Sad news, as it was my local (only) model shop. it wasn't a traditional model shop, it didn't sell kits, but just all the raw materials for their main customers, who were generally professional modelmakers and design students. Having heard the news I went along on Monday, (the last day), as ever the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. I took advantage of the 30% discount I stocked up on mahogany, walnut, obechi, and balsa, for the last time, it's always good to check the grain and pattern of the wood you're buying.

The shop was based at the bottom of Leman Street, London E1 in two railway arches. Leman Street, which is on the fringes of the City of London, used to be 'sub prime', to use an American expression. But times change, and getting off the tube at Aldgate East, and heading down Leman Street it's now all shiny steel and glass towers, redeveloped by a wall of money from the City. London railway arches, which used to be reasonably priced premises for small independent businesses are now also prime real estate.

Feeling a little sad, leaving the 4D Modelshop for the last time, I popped across the road into the Brown Bear, a proper traditional East End boozer, after all it was, allegedly, the hottest day of the year.

Cheers,

Mike

Just got this good news

We are incredibly pleased to announce that 4D modelshop mail order will soon be reopening

J Perkins, a long-standing and respected supplier to the modelling community since 1975, has acquired the modelshop.co.uk website. They have been an important partner of ours over the years, and we are confident they are the right custodians for this vital resource to the creative industries.

Their Managing Director, Sebo Dapper, has personally conveyed his strong intent to maintain and build upon the legacy of 4D. He is deeply committed to ensuring that the invaluable resources you've come to rely on will not only continue but will thrive under their stewardship. The website will continue to operate as 4D at modelshop.co.uk.

J Perkins's immediate priority is to get the modelshop.co.uk website fully operational with a modernised ecommerce component. They are working hard to have it back online by July 18th.

We are working to restore the production services and were grateful for the many messages received when the closure was announced which reinforced our understanding of the importance of the services to many of you.
Sebo and the J Perkins team are deeply committed to the central mission that 4D upheld: to serve as a vital hub for the model-making community in London, the UK, and beyond. With this in mind, they will continue to maintain and develop the job boards, freelancer listings, course directory, important company information, as well as being vital in supporting the production services. They are also dedicated to keeping the highly-regarded New Blades show running, which we know is a highlight for so many.

Thank you once again for your incredible custom and support over the years we pass on the torch with confidence.

Sincerely,

Tim and Mandy

Hi T888,

Thanks for the 'heads up', (horrible management speak I know),  this is indeed good news.

Cheers,
