If you're looking to the south, it's the Emley Moor TV mast.

Bartapuss and all the other uncultured ones  {-) {-) {-) .

Are you ready for some local history and a bit of education??

Its in Halifax, its a tower, called Wainhouse tower its actually an elaborate chimney built for a dye house that never existed, 275 ft tall and took 4 yrs to build.
1871-1875.

Edward Wainhouse ( 1871 - 1883 ) had it built by the architect Booth.

The Abatement act of 1870 required large chimneys be built to carry the smoke out of the valleys but it never got used as such so Mr Wainhouse ended up using it as his observatory.

The total cost of the tower came to £14,000  O0

Now every time you see it you will be able to impress your friends and family with your knowledge of some local history to the area you pass through  O0 O0

Bartapuss .

My mistake,
I thought you were going East towards  junction 29 not West and they are quite right its the Emley Moor T.V. Mast at Emley village just outside Huddersfield.
But look out for the other one its far more magnificent than just a bunch of concrete.  :)

I actually live less than 1/2 mile from Wainhouse Tower and it is indeed a significant land mark for many miles around.  As you traverse the M62 between junctions 25 and 23 you can see it on the north side of the motorway.

When I was young it only used to open one day a year which I think was Whit Sunday but then it opened for a few more occassions for a period of a few years.  I can't remember exactly but I think there are in the region of over four hundred steps and I have climed them on a couple of occasions.  The view from the top is quite breathtaking.

Now it is closed for safety reasons and funds are being raised for repairs to be completed and all the old arguments for and against our heritage are being aired.

We have just finished spending a small fortune on an eyesore in the centre of town which serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever other than keeping the rain off a street.  The covered area  canopy was not wanted by the people of the town and during the many months of it's construction local businesses lost a lot of money.

Then we have to argue about obtaining the finds to repair a structure that has remained an icon of the town for over 125 years.

I really do despair at times over the incompetent idiots we have runing local councils.

When the original metal mast at Emley collapsed due to Icing up, the new "Lighthouse" was constructed in record time - - - - - - -   by Polish builders. :-)) %)

The Poles erected one of the emergency replacement masts in 1969, the tower took rather longer, opening in 1971, and was by a probably a more local firm.

A team of Polish riggers were bought in to erect a temporary mast, apparently they were the only people who were willing to work in the winter conditions prevailing at the time.
The replacement mast began transmitting 3 days and 23 hours later

The concrete structure was designed by Ove Arup design consultants and construction by Tileman & Co. Ltd.
