Deans marine HMS Kelly 1/96
« on: April 05, 2026, 11:07:10 pm »

I recently acquired HMS Kelly from a well known auction site . I've been planning on having a go at a deans marine kit for a while .
This kit came with a lot of extra detail accessories .
I've gone with 2 MFA 385ln motors . 2 esc with a m troniks mixer .
I decided to give lipo batteries a try . So there's 2 7.2v 3200 mah .
Waiting for a new receiver to arrive . I've ordered some roboesch brass props .

I got the propshafts into place but I ran into problem when it came to fitting the rudder . The brass tube supplied with the kit was too small for the rudder post to go through . So I've ordered some more brass tube that should be appropriate. I'll make the bulkheads and cross beams when all the running gear has arrived.
In the meantime I made a battery box out of plasticard and made a start on the superstructure.

cjcj....that kit looks fine......but just a question?

1.  I see the Deans WEB site nominates the sailing weight if the completed 1/96 HMS Kelly model as 3.1 Kg
2.  We see the two battery packs dimensionally fit well, however unsure of the individual weights?
2...A set of digital bathroom or kitchen scales will be so handy in confirming either complete or sub component weights, [even before gluing the double battery box in]

This could be so reassuring even before your first bath displacement test O0 , sub component weight may well be critical even without considering any ballast

As the lipo batteries are significantly lighter than nimh batteries , I'm hoping it's not too far off . I will be weighing everything and doing the bath tub test before sealing the hull up .

The kit came with loads of 3d printed parts . They are lovely and detailed and very light but a pig to glue together. Nothing seems to want to stick to it . Finally managed to get. It to hold with thick ca . If it breaks apart again I may have to resort to epoxy or contact adhesive .

Looks fab CJ

3D printed parts need CA glue to hold them together as they are resin items.

Had a productive day today. Drilled out the hawse pipes . Got the decks fitted and filled . Done the forward structure coamings . Made a start on the forward deck fittings.
Still need to finish filling and shaping the breakwater.
