Deans Marine HMS Tantaside
« on: May 11, 2026, 07:39:31 pm »

Hi All,

I have picked up a started Deans Marine HMS Tanatside.  Prop tubes fitted, motors mounted, rudder and servo fitted, forecastle fitted, bridge superstructure built, main deck cut out.  At first glance, although the build quality was rough, I thought it was salvageable but alas no.  The prop tubes had been fitted badly, the motors weren't lined up correctly, the forecastle was as wavey as the hind leg of a donkey, there wasn't a single piece of the bridge that was OK, so that was it, I deconstructed the entire thing.  The forecastle wasn't salvageable so I will cut a new one from some spare 1.5mm sheet I have, but it will have to be in two pieces as I don't have any long enough.  I have lowered the hull top in the forecastle section by 5mm to straighten it out The prop tubes, motors, rudder servo, etc., have been removed from the hull which is now completely bare apart from the rudder tube.  I have deconstructed the bridge and cut new parts using the old ones as templates.  I have rescued the main deck, removing some dodgy bits from the main hatch and strengthening it with some 1.5mm sheet and added coming around rear hatch.  I have started the build of the rear gun platform, the searchlight platform and made new parts for the PomPom platform as these were missing for some reason.  Next step will be to fit the prop tube.  So far I am 4 days into it and I think I have just about got it to a good starting point.  If anyone has built one of these, please feel free to offer advice and guidance as the instructions aren't the best

You are lucky! I was given an HMS Javelin in a similar state except the previous owner had cut all the portholes out as rectangles, all of which were slightly different sizes and none lined up. I see the portholes on yours are marked as rectangles which is presumably why my PO had cut them like that.

Yes, it was a mixture, some portholes marked with a cross, some with a circle and some with a rectangle.  Deans boats can be a bit confusing, I am struggling to understand the instructions in a few places, but I think the main thing is they are not for begiiners or novices.  This is the 5th boat I will have built, 1 Revel Corvette, 2 other Deans Marine 1/24 scale boats and a Vintage Model Works Police Launch, all of them were garage rescues, either part built, just started or not even taken out of the box.  There must be hundreds like this all over the country

Oh no they definitely are not for beginners!!!! I would say that the instructions are a good guide to which you must add lots of research. I found in a kit I had bought that the photos didn't match the kit parts. I think a test build had been photographed for the instructions, but the test builder had done their own thing which was at odds with the assembly of the parts.
There were a few minor issues with the quality of detail parts but this was rectified quickly by the Deans team. I accept that some warships are from a large class with many variations and/or served through many weapons upgrades etc so it can be difficult to get everything right at the kit design stage.

Following on from my first post, I have got the photos of the kit from the eBay listing which shows the condition it was obtained in.  I had said that the only salvageable bits were the main deck and the rudder post.  Unfortunately that wasn't the case, as the rudder post tube was for some reason made out of aluminium tube and oversized with brass sleeves on the rudder post.  So that has also been stripped out now and a new block and rudder post tube of the correct size installed.

The hull is now ready for the decks to be fitted.  The rudder has been reinstalled using the correct sized tube, servo relocated so it is accessible, prop tubes refitted, electrics installed.

New forecastle cut, decks are on, tested in the bath and ballast added, ready for initial sea trials before painting and finishing

First sea trial 3 weeks after starting work on the Tantaside.  Very pleased with how it sailed.  Plenty fast enough on 2 x MFA385 with 7.2v ni-mh battery and single ESC.  Very manouverable and quite stable.  It has 250gm of ballast added and is riding a little high but there is lots of fittings, etc., to add.  Time to start painting and finishing it off.

Well I finally finished the build today so I thought I would put up a few photos of the finished ship.  It was my first 1/96 scale build and I don't think I will be doing another anytime soon.  I wil stick to larger scale like 1/32 or 1/24
