Operating Engine Room roof vent made from Brass sheet
« on: December 03, 2007, 02:09:46 am »

When I decided to re vamp the superstructure on the HS Tug I decided to make a new sky light as the one I had made several years ago had been modified several times during the build.
Having decided what mods where required from the original a Piece of 0.015 brass was used for the build I had decided that I would build it slightly different from the original in that the main structure would be bolted together, this would make it easier to clean up and enable any mods.A brass sheet was marked out and on this one I had the advantage of a min mill to cut the holes out saves hours of filling.  Pictures  Roof 1-2-3-4

On the original I made the hatches then tried to cut the holes out for the portholes (they did not look very nice) so on this one I cut the holes and this enabled me to make a small jig to bend the edges and keep the hole central Pictures 13 -14. Picture 15 shows the first bends I put it in the vice and taped it over I then notched the corners out and bent the othere ends Picture 16 shows it ready to silver solder the corners Picture 17 shows them ready to clean up and  trim to thickness.

Hinges on the original the hinges where made from strips with the ends bent round a rod , on this one I decided to mill hinges out of solid picture 18 -19 -20 -21 Picture 22 shows the hinges fixed on to the lids I used rivets to hold them in place then soft soldered them from below. I only soldered  three of the rivets as the forth would be used to hold the angle that the operating rod would attach to later . I used handrail stations for the other part of the hinge and some .75 brass rod picture 23 shows it after a quick brush with a brass wire brush

Operating mechanism two pieces of brass 6mm x 3mm was used at either end to form the
Supports for the mechanism  the problem is that they booth had to turn in overset directions picture 25 -26 shows the mechanism in position , it still has temper operating rods that I used to get the correct length. Pictures 27 -28 -29 shows it ready to fit

That is absolutely beautifully designed and made.  Modelling at this level is not seen very often and it is just as enjoyable to watch your manufacturing process as it is to see the completed item.

Watching it in real life operation would be amazing!

I thought we had lost all the masters, but far from it, perfection at its best.  KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK Peter.   It sets a high standard for us all to work too.  O0

Bigford  Iits actually 5+2   5.2volts, its a small voltage read out that I use , its handy to see if the servo is working to hard.

Umi_Ryuzuki  I recently looked at your web site and was so impressed with the modeling (especially the church) really nice bit of work

Sort of have to ask, ... "Which Church?...  :D

Not much brass work in those models, and most of my brass work has been stick assembly for
masts, stuffing tubes, and the odd rudder or railing...

To see a simple superstructure and then the hatch built and then made operable is inspiring to say the least.

Sorry I cannot help there , But I have just covered a superstructure in ultra thin fiberglass that makes it ultra smooth and takes paint very well, I am trying and have been for some time been trying to get some plans /drawrings of a US Jeep around the ww2/ Korean war so I can build one in brass at 12th scale I just don't seem to be able to get any.
