Cor!  :o
Just look at the detail even on the ships boats- not bad for an ARTR!  :o
They are getting better and better!!!!

Hang on, am I dreaming or have Graupner acutally stuck a swatzsticker below that eagle on the models' stern?!
I know these things are made in China? There were many differences in my Prinz Eugene compared to the one shown on the Graupner site so I bet you that eagle won't be on the production ones!!!

Yep, looks a very nice model indeed - they seem to have done an excellent job, but then its not too cheap either!

And yep, certainly a swastika there on the stern under the eagle - but then it was a part of the actual ship wasn't it? - makes it a bit difficult to hide - not as if its a flag that could be left off! Assume that will make it illegal to own one in Germany then?? :o

Unless we have another round of espioniege & copying here in China, that new release from Graupner appears to be Ocean Voyage's (Voyage Models) 1/128 Graf Spee.  I was fortunate enough to visit them last November & saw one of these kits - the detail is so impressive, I expected to see rifling down the bore of the 10.5 secondary armament!  Its well worth the money if this is what Graupner is offering. VM's Graf includes the golden eagle on the stern as you can see here http://www.voyagemodel.com/cqzx-n.asp?productid=337

For DKM fans, OV will soon release a 1/128 Scarnhorst along with a 1/200 Kongo for the IJN crowd.  I saw the Scarnhorst test hull while there & it was very detailed.

Before anyone asks, I've been told by the owner that all his work is original design & that nothing he offers has been copied.  Again, this is China...  ::)

Yes, translations always offer interesting & sometimes funny part of daily life here.  Some of us expats have gotten used to incorporating drinking games with watching Chinese-translations of the cheap DVDs you find on the market here.  Many are quite hilarious while others simply drive you nuts!  No wonder one has to be drunk to understand half of what is being said.  {-)

By the way, my last sentence of my post followed by the wink was due very much in part to this specific model offered by VM.  I heard from a well-known & distinguished maker of fine ship models that the photos of VM's Tribal show the exact same mistakes as found in their kit that they first brought to market.  Before anyone steps in raise a stink about design infringement, I want to state here plainly that I am only a hobbyist who knows many of the manufacturers here, & have no relation to this or any other factory.  Actually, I've not spoken to the factory for the past few months after having asked the question that was posed to me regarding design origins of this particular kit.  I guess some folks a bit thin skinned over here.  :-\

I do have to state, though, that their quality is extremely good, the kits complete & anyone interested in one of their models would be happy with what they buy compared to other kits of Chinese origin.  There are several Nagato builds to be found on forums & I have many photos of several of their line that I'll be more than happy to share should anyone be interested.  I only put off buying their 1/100 Akizuki kit due to the backlog I have with my present kit stash, but would have no hesitation with buying from them once they pile gets reduced in size.

Are their 'kits' really that i.e you have to build them, just like Deans Marine sell, or are they RTR / ARTR 'kits?

Ocean Voyage sells their line as complete kits, semi-finished as well as custom built ARTR.  TianJie who supplies Graupner their S-100 & Prinz Eugen is similar in the way they do business.

During my visit, they were in the midst of building 10 Nagatos for a Japanese customer that pretty much took over production for a month.  They are a small shop with limited capacity but offer a very high quality build.  As with other Chinese non-mass market suppliers, their instructions tend to be lean & will require some experience to build as well as a lot of reference material.

Here's a good reference point to get an idea on what their kits are like: http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=31582

They sell the Nagato through HobbyEasy, a HKG online hobby store & all other models can be purchased directly from the factory.  Since they don't have distribution outside of Asia, you'll need email them directly to see what kits are available in stock, but be patient since their English skills are fairly limited.  If anyone needs assistance with communicating with them, send me a PM & I'll be glad to help.

How on earth do they plan to meet the world wide demand for Graf Spee ARTRs from a big company like Graupner?!

They're actually slightly larger than TJ was when Graupner started selling the S-100 & Prinz Eugen with capacity of 40+ kits monthly so its workable.  Of course, I could be wrong & already someone larger here has another 1/128 Graf to offer since factories tend to knock each other off in the blink of an eye.

For example, I just came across another RTR Bismarck that I've not seen before in both 1/200 & 1/128 scale. Talk about being proud - they'll "only" asking $2240 for the 1/200 & $3500 for its larger cousin.  :o

At these prices, Graupner's new Graf Spee looks like a bargain!

Pointy,

TianJie makes Takao & I've got their 1/200 kit that I'll part with at considerably less than retail if you're interested.

Here are a few photos of TJ's Maya, their workshop & of the Prinz Eugen prototype taken in Dec '06.  That one photo is me with TJ's owner, Mr. Liang when I visited them to pick up Takao.

Thanks Hermill,

As for the Takao, very tempted!! I just dunno for certain right now, really really like the cargo ship on that tjmodels site, even thinking about the larger scale Maya.  :)

Pointy,

I fully understand..  that Maya is rather imposing in 1/100.  It was a commission for a US customer & was being packed the week I was there.  If memory serves me right, it was just under $5,000 including shipping & took 3 months to build.   Not sure if they actually offer the cargo ship you mentioned - many of what they show is vaporware unless you can cover the MOQ.
Their tug is quite popular as are the Sov, Missouri & Yamato kits.

To get an idea of their product, you'll want to read Pat Mathews' 1/144 Yamato build review in Ships in Scale magazine; he's also posted this online at RC Groups & ModelWarship forums. I hear
things have greatly improved since Pat took on his project - I do know that my kit has all the parts compared to what he went through.  >>:-(

Here's some gossip for you gents hot off the Chinese telegraph:

I've been told by a very good source that this new ARTR Graf Spee is NOT from Ocean Voyage but from Graupner's existing Chinese OEM source who bought a kit from OV last year under the false pretense of planning to market OV's line in the EU & then proceeded to copy it for Graupner.  Again, its really nothing more than typical Chinese practice at work here, but this one happens to be for an established EU brand who is marketing it as their own design.

This should lead to some interesting discussions at Dortmund next month!  :-\
