sourcing paint?
« on: February 12, 2008, 04:24:14 pm »

Anybody got any idea where I can get some Bronze paint? I need enough to paint the bottom half of a hull thats a metre long and 300mm wide.

Tried model shops , decorators shops, ebay, the best I found was Humbrol bronze, in a tin so small that the entire contents  wouldnt cover a young girls fingernails ??? As I dont want to buy 40 or even 50 tins of the stuff, anyone have any suggestions?
thanks.

Have a look at the Plasti-Cote range B&Q Depot.

These do larger (250ml and 500ml bottles) of acrylic paint and they do have a bronze in their range...

but as has been said above - try and source the bronze colour in a spray - much better for the larger areas you need to cover.

I use mainly Plastikote but they dont do a Bronze, the nearest they have is Antique Gold which is a dark gold.

I get therm from PaintSprays.co.uk

wow! so many replies so quickly! Thanks to all.
I didnt want to spray, I'm not very good with them. I tend to put too many coats too soon so that they run and blob  :embarrassed: :embarrassed:.
maybe its time to try again.
Thanks to all.

You might not like to spray but I reckon it's time to learn. Using an airbrush (Badger 200 in my case) I reckon you'd get that painted with no more than 3 tins of Humbrol. Spray thin coats and hit the paint with a blast from a hairdryer straight away.

Alos, use a whitebase coat - Humbrol primer in a can is good. Metalics have terrible covering powers so anything else will take forever to build up colour on.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm serious when I say I dont get on with spray. Hell, I'm a crap painter with a 4" brush and a wooden fence  :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
I tend to the Mr Bean school of painting.... remove the room funiture, and put a stick of dynamite inside a large can of magnolia!

And buying the spray gear for this model alone would really break the budget wide open.

Its no good, I'm going to have to switch to plan B.

Now then, wonder what colours I could have if I had a plan B? ::) ::)

Hi,

I just brush painted a hull just under half that size with 2 tins of Humbrol paint- 2 coats - they go a lot further than you'd think. I reckon 4-5 tins would do it (£5.00), just tip them all into a bigger pot first so there are no issues with colour matching (and so you can get your brush in  {-) )

I'm OK thanks. By pure fluke chance I found some humbrol large tins of bronze in a toy shop, when I was looking for something else. I'm a happy camper O0 O0 O0 O0
