Caldercraft Joffery or HMS Resolve
« on: March 25, 2008, 12:32:37 am »

Greetings to all,
I am considering the purchase of the Caldercraft tug Joffery or the HMS Resolve. I would appreciate any comments or advice concerning either of these kits. I have recently heard some negative comments corncerning quality issues with these kits.
I can't afford to buy into trouble as this will probably be my last high dollar kit purchase. Any advice would be greately appreciated.
Thanks,

I have built the Joffre and found the kit excellent. It was originally a Frank Hinchcliff kit before he became Mountfleet models, Sadly Frank is no longer with us but theJoffre is a fitting memorial to him. The only problem for me was the scale required as you require thin fingers but this applies to all models of this scale. I am now building the Mountfleet "Bangarth" which I find superb.
Best of luck with whichever model you choose,
John

I've built Resolve.  No trouble I can remember.  I built in the Royal Navy finish.

Appears you pay your money and take your choice

Good luck

Langsford and Ken,
Thanks for your replies. I really appreciate your input.
I would love to see pictures of your boats if you should care to post them.
Again, many thanks and happy boating

Sorry, no pictures.

I forgot to take any photos before selling the finished boat

Tug46,
There is a considerable difference in price between these two kits, is this a factor?

Have attached a pic of my Joffre which I have now sold, money used to buy a new kit. Am I alone in getting most satisfaction from building rather than sailing? Obviously we all have different interests.

You're not alone, building far outweighs sailing for me, though I've never sold a boat as yet

Langsford,
Many thanks for the photo. You do first rate work!
Bob,
Price is a consideration as the Joffre is half the price of the Resolve. But I might, in a moment of weakness, and a complete lack of adult supervision, decide that I really can afford the Resolve.
Cheers

Tug46,
At about the same price have you considered the Imara or (cheaper) the Model Slipways "Empire Tug"

Bob,
I have considered those kits and several others, but the Joffre and Resolve appeal to me the most (so far).
I quess it all comes down to what grabs you and what your budget will allow.
Thanks for your post.
