Free Pool runs at Brockwell Lido. South London

Pool runs at Brockwell Lido

I've put off posting about this until I had some feedback from key members who've expressed an interest in the past regarding pool runs.

Fusion, the company that manages Brockwell Lido, which is based in Herne Hill, South/South-East London, has offered us the use of their excellent lido facilties for no cost during the autumn, winter and early spring months. The pool is open to swimmers from May until September, the rest of the year the pool is not in use.

.

The pool is quite large 50 metres by 25 meters wide, or 164 feet by 82 feet for those working in old money. This should suit all but the largest of boats (32nd parallel Gato owners may feel a tad cramped;)). The pool was completely refurbished over a two year period at a cost of £3million. The pool dates back to 1937 and is a grade II listed Art Deco structure. Please visit the website for more information on the site and facilites-

http://www.brockwell-lido.com/pool.htm

Transport wise, the pool has it's own carpark. For those travelling by public transport, the facility is very close to Herne Hill railway station. Brixton is the nearest tube, which is on the Victoria line, the Lido is about half a mile from the station- you can get a cab or take a bus to the lido. Bus routes passing by Brockwell park are numbers 3, 196, 322.

So far feedback has inidicated that monthly meetings would be optimal. We are able to hold more meetings than this,  the only stipulation from the pool management is that everyone holds model insurance and that we get a reasonable number of folk turning up.

The meetings will be open to Sub Committee and AMS. Newcomers and non members of either organisation are also welcome, but you will be required to demonstrate proof of valid insurance cover if you wish to sail.

I'm happy to organise a monthly metting. A higher frequency of meetings could prove tricky, as my job requires me to work some weekends and various shifts, so I would look for an assistant or two to manage things when I am unavailable. Ramesh(Wheelerdealer) has already kindly offered to help out where possible, but the more the merrier.

I am formulating some dates for next year. I propose that we meet on the first or second Sunday of the month starting at 10-00am finishing at 16-00pm-

12th October 08
2nd November 08
7th December 08
11th January 09
1st February 09
15th March 09
5th April 09

There may also be the possibility of using the pool during the Summer months (assuming we get a Summer this year, we had about one day last year!). The availability will be reduced, but possibly an evening session, if there is any demand.

This is where you guys come in- I need your support to make this work. I'm aware some of you live a good distance, but if you can make one or two then please pipe up, also please let folk know who are not internet savvy- I can be contacted by telephone, email and snail mail. My details are here-

Thanks for the support. So far we have about 10 names in the hat, if everyone brings a couple of boats along, that'll be twenty boats on show- none too shabby, and I think we'll get greater numbers once the word spreads.

I've had a positive response from the pool manager, he's happy with the dates proposed, although he did warn things can get chilly December/January time, with even a bit of ice forming on the pool. I recommend a hammer and some thermals from Marks and Sparks.

I applaud BROCKWELL LIDO for allowing the use of their pool for modellers..However I can see why other authorities are not as willing yes its Health & safety ..I hate their interference of matters as much as the next person, but when you consider where some models are used, Canals , lakes , rivers etc where there could be Veils disease , and many other countless nasties. Also what the model may be painted in , some of the older ones could well be lead based paint , and then theres the oil in propshafts , I would imagine  a H&S group would have a field day with that lot..

Don't get me wrong I'm all for the use of pools, and hearing what does happen in pools (my wifes a swimming teacher) I think I would prefer any of the above (maybe not Veils), If you have ever watched "Keven & Perry go large" with the beach shot you get my drift.
So as long as a models Hull  is given a good wash before hand I personally can not see any problem , As when I was swimming we had to have a shower before a swim , that no longer happens in a lot of pools so heaven knows what goes in pools now..

Well done Brockwell for common sense..and I hope to get there one day.

Good point, Mr Long build.

When I go swimming, I'm forced through the shower and foot tray, (whether I want to or not)  before I can access the pool.  Can't be too careful where hiegene is concerned.

Yes okay, thank you gents. Can we keep this thread on the topic of those attending or wishing to attend the pool runs, please. Our submarines are non-polluting, and no self respecting model submariner uses oil in their propshaft(s).

Cheers,

Hi Andy
Sorry thought the pool was going to be used for all types of models not just subs , hence my comments..

Anyway moving right along how deep is the pool and what is the maximum depth a model sub can dive without loosing signal ?

Subs only, unless numbers get very low, in which case invitiations to targets may be extended. In my experience, skimmers and subs don't work well together- too many skippers fail to keep a beady eye out for submarines, and I've seen far too many collisions, where the submarine tends to come off worse.

Regarding depth, this is a very didfficult thing to judge. Mineral content, chlorine, salt etc all affect the signal. In very fresh water with the sub close to the bank, you can expect the signal to reach down to between 10-15 feet. Chlorine and/or high mineral content will decrease this quite substantially. Salt water eliminates radio reception altogether, which means you need to run an aerial to the surface if operating in such conditions.

Most model subamrines are equipped with failsafes, which will allow the sub to surface in the event of radio transmission failure. Modern receivers with signal conditioning help iron out any small glitches.

In practice most submariners operate within about 1m (3 feet) of the surface. Go much beyond that and water refraction tends to interfer with the enjoyment of operation.

I'm expecting somewhere between 15 people at the moment, assuming they all turn up- unfortunately I have no control over the peccadilloes of unsympathetic girlfriends or spouses. Clearly there'll be more boats than that there, as people tend to bring along more than one.

Hello!

Got myself a Neptune and would enjoy the challenge of getting to the Lido by Public Transport. I am mpba (belong to the Victoria Parlk Steam Club) member, does that include insurance or is it something separate

Thanks John

Some photos from todays event. About 9 people showed with boats, weather was glorious, so were the facilities.

I'm sure others will add to these.
