Ferry over! Bridlington
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:44:50 pm »

Is there anybody on here who knows Bridlington?.Those large passenger carrying rowboats that ferry the tourists across the harbour? How do I make one of those.
Please just point me in the right direction

Hi Mikey,
Have you considered the old but very sound Bread & Butter construction method?  Its great if you don't want something really large and if you have some wood working skills.
Check out pages 2 & 3 of this wee tutorial  http://www.sfmbc.net/Beginners_Boat_Building_Part1_R1.pdf

Our resident guru (Gib Duthie) swears by yellow pine.  Old Victorian doors, church pews etc.. and he produces some wonderful hulls that are significantly lighter in weight than their GRP equivalent.

If I can find a pikkie I'll post it.

Iain.

Hi mikeyh,
Sadly the across the harbour service no longer exists.
Model Boats plan service do a plan for a dinghy that you could possibly scale up.

Hi, I am not familiar with the boats you are talking about, but if I understand correctly they are rowing boats, if you fancy a trip out on the weekend of 31st May/ 1st June Mike Sheppard (the rowing man) will be in attendance displaying his rowing models at Alfold, (see club events or commercial events for more details) I feel sure that he would be pleased to sit down with you and chat about rowing operation and building of this type of model.

Hi again mikey,

There are a couple of other Brid members on the forum, so I may get shot down here.

I think the Bridlington Belle ran aground at the harbour entrance and was scrapped in Goole.
The Flamborian was in Devon, although I was told it has now sailed to France as a live aboard.
Never heard of the Thornwick  :embarrassed:
Was Boy's own one of the two speed boats? I never saw it, but I believe two of Brid MBS members are building models of the two speed boats.

Regards Bob (Ex londoner)

My uncle, Geoff clark, used to row one of the ferryboats and then skippered one of the daytrip fishing boats. If my memory serves me right the two speedboats were 'Robin' and 'Swift'. Oh happy days fishing off the south pier. My nan was manageress of the spa theatre,I think thats gone now.thanks for those pics great!!

The Spa is just about to be re opened after a multi million pound make over.

We (Brid Club) used to hold a yearly show there, but since the re ferb, it is much too expensive to hire. It will probably be re opened and stay in a very good condition due to lack of use.

I bet Gordon Greenwood will be there with his organ and his dancing crew will be using the spa .
I wonder if Status Quo will be allowed in  ;D .

Hi portside II,

Sadly, the Quo are not playing there this year. Hull is the nearest venue  :'(

Don't know if this is because I refused to guest with them the last time they played here.

I will be appearing at Utopia though on April 20th if you are interested.

Well Daz,

it's quite late, so I'd better roll over lay down , but I don't think I'll get much sleep as Junior's wailing.
