I have a Pershing, bog standard apart from painting and adding boxes and bits. I have " Battles" with a neighbour who has a Panther. With the soft air cannons. As they aren't Masterpieces and the guns do relatively no damage it is an amuseing way of spending half an hour or so! Great fun!! Who says men grow up!!??

Sounds really good Nordsee I wish I had pleasant neighbours but alas no.. I just got in a Panther G and done it up with the rust effect. Looks good too. Only thing is its got anR2D2 on the top where the driver should be and just doesnt look right...
give me the old shootin pellets and paint bombs they look good on a hit. Havent tried R2D2 yet but suppose will do it Havent tried the IR yet and wont know how it works as none around here has one that I know of so if I get killed I wont know will I. Isnt the tank supposed to do funny things when its hit???
Cheers :-))

Yes,

Here is the web site, Tokyo Hobbies in Japan:

http://www.tokyo-hobbies.com/sankyo.html

The T-74 can be electric or gas nitro engine powered.

They also do a King Tiger.

I got mine 2nd hand so I have been repairing, painting and and cleaning it.
It has a nitro O.S. FS (four stroke) engine fitted.

Here are 2 more pictures:

First hit it rattles and the R2D2 glows, Second hit is a "Kill" and everything stops for 20 seconds or so.

Hello fellow tankies well I havent been on the forum for a while so much has happened
I found out about that R2D2 and tks for how it works. gun barrel recoils light flashing etc not bad.
Since I spoke last have added a Tiger to the collection but have left it in an as is condition like it came out of the factory, plus have some figs and the good old leader of the third reich onboard. Idea is when you look at it, it's supposed to represent a fresh tank coming out of the factory and being presented to the german people by Herr Hitler. will post a pikke when I get new batteries for the camera, another I found when I went to take some pikkies for the forum.
Im also doing 2 Panzers of the earlier types one in Afrika Corps and 1 in Normal grey colours.
Just waiting for various crew figures to arrive and also some US Command Figures have been ordered and are also on the way.
These will be going into 2 Bulldogs 1 done in winter cammo and the other in Cammo used in Vietnam.
Tell you what I am having great trouble finding some Russian Crew members, anyone know of any place I can get them please.
Hope everyone is aok and yes I miss my Wuillie has anyone heard from him???
Chris :-))

I have been playing with 1/6 scale tanks for about 6 years now.
Ive tried to "doit all myself" and with the cost of casting tracks and milling sprockets and road wheels for a Challenger 1i could have nearly bought another house !
I now stick with modified Mark 1 Tanks products. ( about half the price of doing it myself)

website if you are interested is       http://www.mark-1-tank.co.uk/

its all good fun.

Hi Ben re your question on recoil barrel. I don't know if it would do the job but I bought the latest Heng Long Panther G and that has a recoiling barrel, perhaps you could use the basics and do a few mods on your Bulldog, Just a thought as they must have spare parts for the beastie and you could have a look at that barrel setup

Hello Ben, No the tank has a fully revolving turret like the other models, Yes shame things do cost money dont they unfortunately, I dont have any spare parts to assist you either, it was just that I was thinking you could have used the Bulldogs front covers and Barrel but used the G workings anyhow good luck with it, I found out as this Panther G is the first IR tank I have, that it looks very effective with the barrel recoiling and the big flash at the end of the barrel looks great too.
Wish I could help out more mate Sorry, if I think of anything will let you know, perhaps some of the boys out there might have some advice or a spare setup they can sell cheap or dont use.

Sorry bout that didnt think they went through. these are just a couple out of the collection. The Bulldog tank is featured in a book of short stories about a tank called Blue Suede Shoes and her crew of 3. The Tank you see is called in the book Tiger 10 and is another Tank in the Squadron with Blue Suede Shoes.
Book is being published now in New York and waiting book cover designs to be sent to me now, I didnt like the first couple they sent me.
The Sherman is one that Helped the British at Normandy in 1944 hence the Union Jack.

Well fellow tankies am a very happy chappie,
Found some Tank Crew Figures of a Late German Tank Crew for the Leopard Tank pictured above.
I have been looking for a while and found that yes, Tamiya have a Tank Crew in 1/16 with one figure and one half bust designed to suite the Leopard. WOOPEE another project I can get finished.
Figures are unpainted but that makes it more the challenge to do a good job does'nt it?
Ok be good out there and lets see a few more hits into the forum Lads and Ladies, do we have any Lady Tankies?

Cheers

I was sitting here looking at my fleet of tiger 1 tanks, when I thought that I should like to add Metal Upgrade Parts to one Tiger 1 to make it a really classy tank.
This is what annoys me the most about how much some people just seem to think we play with our toys.
So I thought I would show you all just how much the cost is going to be for my Tiger 1 upgrade.
Firstly,  the sourcing and the costings of the Metal Upgrade Parts I require (this is a personal choice).
Secondly,  the time and patience which we all need, to put it all into place. (the build).
Thirdly,  the painting and the extras to add that final touch of realism to make the Tiger 1 an Exceptional Beastie.
So lets take it away.
All parts are designed to fit the Henglong Tiger 1.  All prices in Australian Dollars.
So Initial buy of Remote Control Tank 175.00 plus postage
Tiger Tank Metal Hull Upgrade Set.     140.00
Tiger Tank Metal Extra Tuff Springs for better handling     14.00
Tiger Tank Metal Suspension Arm Upgrade Set.     20.00

Now with the Original tank costing me 175.00 plus all that I have quoted I am now looking at over 1000,00 Aussie bucks to create my TOY so they call it. I think it's more than a Toy, don't you.  Now some will say, is it all worthwhile mate?   Sure it is, Would any of you pay me over a 1000.00 to make one for you? I bet you would'nt but then that's Modelling  I guess, if you want the best I guess you do it yourself or go and pay for it already done these days.
I would love to hear some comments about this and look forward to receiving some.
Cheers

but

the fact is i have no money so i sell what i can and take what i can

and

it takes a lot of skill   /luck {-) to build a boat and a lot of it is trile and eror

Well Hello again Fellow Tankies, Nothing from any of you out there guess you must be freezing your what nots off over there and its keeping you all quiet eh?
Its been a Sunny 32 degrees C here and have had the aircon going to keep cool.
So Ok then re the above project on the Tiger, I have started on this magic dollar ride and to me its already starting to change a normal Heng Long Tiger into something worth having.
Here are some Pikkies of what I have done so far, and I was joking with my Supplier who is a mate of mine, by saying its gonna be a shame to cover it all up with paint.

I am not going to go crazy with one of those Jazzy colour schemes you see many Tigers painted in but this Tank is going to be modeled in as they say Dunkelgrau (Dark Grey).

This Tank is modeled as Pz.Kpfw. V1 Tiger Ausf. E (Sd.Kfz. 181)
                                  Pz.Regt.Grossdeutschland
                                  Neuhammer,  January 1943

Nine tigers were delivered to the Regiment. On the side of the turret the tanks displayed the letter S for Schwere, meaning heavy and two numbers indicicated the platoon and the position of the tank within that platoon. The platoon commander's tank carried a 0 as the second number, so tank S20 as this tank is designated belonged to the commander of the second platoon. The national identification Balkan Cross was painted on the side of the tanks and on the rear.

Here is the commencement of S20

its freezing here in portsmouth and a fairly bit windy  keep posting pics as i was thinking of doing a similar thing

i finally got the flash unit only cost £5 in my local model shop were as the same thing on tank zone is £16 so i pluged it in turned the tank on it started firing uncontrollebly and stoped took the top off as the inside hasw also seen a refit and is now desighned like a tamiya sherman could smell smoke (not the smoke system) and the tank woldnt work so an expert club member is trying to fix it but untill then im tankless  <:( <:( <:(

No they are still fully remote control.

They are removable from the scene for transport and using when needed.

I have also done up a couple of M43A1 bulldogs for a Jungle scene and Ive ordered the Palm Trees for that from HongKong but will take some pikkies of the Tanks and post em here tomorrow night.

The Jungle scene will be called on Patrol and that tiger 1 is a Maintenance Field Depot.

Ok will catch you later with pikkies.

i was a bit but do you have a local model shop beacuse mine soldered the same conectors to a 9.6v battery and its charger i had to cut out the springs and file it down to a box you will see what i mean if you do buy it and she runs brilliantly it fits tight but snug the cover bends a bit but not enough to ever cause any plroblems my gran lives in a country cottage and leading up to the cottage is a drive that leads to her house and her neghbers but its very trtrous with dips on side is higher up and is split by a sheer drop so the car has to be high bottomed it went through puddles that went to half the heght of the wheels it was fine it was all bumpy and hilly it was fine it is in tact and looking brilliant

Gidday, in answer to your questions Krafty.
I just use a lot of the stuff that Model Railroaders use plus whats in my Back yard and also various sites for Tank Accessories.
You should have a look at Awesome Hobbies over here got some really great stuff.
Painting is normal water paints either by hand or by airbrush and also sometimes modelling clay.

Here is another i just finished its a Snow Leopard in its Winter Cammo.

Title: Re: rc tanks
Post by: airwolf572010 on April 02, 2011, 12:37:45 pm
Ok Krafty just waiting for the Palm Trees to arrive but might have to order more dependent on how thick I want the jungle to be. Its called on Patrol and we might use the 3 Bulldogs just to give it some impact.
Here is a fun project I started and yet to finish. I had some large Lorries you call them we call them Semi's made in China and over 1000mm in length so I have joined 2 trailers together and building a Tank Transporter. Still a lot of work to be done to finish it, have to paint most of the chromework black being Army and rewire the Headlights and blinkers etc, but you can see it is a big model with the Leopard on the back which isnt a small tank.

Hey Krafty Here are just the 3 Bulldogs which I will use in the Jungle Scene.

2 of these gave me the idea to write a Novel which is being published very soon called Blue Suede Shoes.

It's about the crew of a US Bulldog Tank serving in Vietnam.

It will be released over in the Uk and a lot of other countries so keep any eye out for it.

It's 15 short stories and hopefully due for release in July. The Publishers are designing the Book Cover now and it's a mixture of Humour and some Sadness also.

I have a page on Facebook and a link to Twitter if you go to Charles Armstrong and then look for page Blue Suede shoes where you can have a read about it and I have written one story in there to let people know what it is like. So any other Tankies out there have a look and become friends or fans and let me know tks.

Ok and here is my last Picture of tank collection  more of them.

Mate don't give up the ghost yet on the Tiger . If you follow the other guys advice there are so many spares to fix that tank up its unbelievable. From wheel sets, to turrets, to barrels anything you want so sit down take a good look at it and verify what you need. Ask the shops they will advise you also if they are worth their salt. Theirs no hurry buy bits at a time. I did my Tiiger up bit by bit and she came out beautiful. If you say she is running thats a bonus. look at getting new gearboxes if needed stuff like that ok dont go rushin and throwing it away they are not cheap and the finished result even if its only for you is well worth it.

I have a Heng Long Panther with the metal gearbox and tracks, it's never been off the front room carpet, so why I bought the pro version I don't know  %%
The only problem I have had with it is of my own making, I over filled the smoke liquid and have never seen it smoking. Only yesterday I decided to have a play with it and annoy the cat, and when I turned it over to put a better battery in, yet more liquid came out of the pipes.... %) One of these days it will run out and maybe I might see a little puff or two....you never know  :-)

Ive decided to let you fellow Tankies out there around the world that at long last the book Blue Suede Shoes is now released and available from bookstores and online around the World.

I know I did advise you all about it's being written but now the finished product is available for your enjoyment.

(http://s8.postimage.org/3rfjmhuw1/51_L879g_Of8_L_SL500_AA300.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/3rfjmhuw1/)

The book deals with a Tank crew in Vietnam, and is full of Humour and some serious parts.

If you liked M A S H then you will dig this book .

The Tank is a US Walker Bulldog and it's crew.   Armo - Commander,  The Rat - Driver   Perko - Gunner.

A group of Misfits who get up to mischief while fighting the War in the Jungles of Vietnam, and get away with a lot, but Col Mills the CO is quite aware of their antics.

If you decide to purchase the book I believe it ranges from US 7.99 per copy and upwards.

So support another Tankie buy his book, pass on the info and most of all enjoy.

Book 2 will be released Next year along with the Ebooks.

well after ALOT of work
the tiger seems to run
albeit slower on one side than the other ( so forward would send her in circles )
i belive the probem is the motors ( our of 3 of them, one is almost locked up, 2 run)
but it looks like the first gear in the slower side isnt centered right. ( but it is the metal upgrade gearset )
jobs done
-rewire controller
-build gearbox
-reassemble turret
-glue muzzle brake back
jobs to do
sort gearbox / motor problem
no nails all the wheels back on
 :embarrassed:
Title: Re: rc tanks
Post by: thebackways on January 03, 2012, 07:10:42 pm
right after finding some of the original gears in a box down the shed ( not an easy task )
i re build both gearboxs using original plasic first gears  ( the one that meshes with the motor )
it runs much smoother now however, i have 3 motors, one that doesnt turn, one that turns slowly ( and only 1 direction ) and one that runs fine
new motors are on the cards i think

well my stepdad smashed it up in a fit of rage, along with alot of things
then it looks like he tried to repair it ( hot melting the wheels in, selotaping the gearboxs down etc)
so ive some spare parts for it lying around
like ive 2 gearboxs ( one plastic and one metal )
3 motors ( maybe another one lying around in the shed )

he's a nice bloke  <*<

but he likes to fix things by smashing them to peices

Post by: airwolf572010 on February 11, 2012, 11:47:58 pm
I read that info and many thanks Dicky D.

The only thing I cannot for the life of me understand is the difference money wise between say Hobby city tanks, Matarro, Heng long tanks and Tamiya Tanks.

I bought a Leopard 1/16th scale tank from Hobby city and its a great looking tank, does all the tank things like shooting, recoiling barrel, lights front and back, Crew figures included etc etc. Now I paid 175.00 for this and its a big tank, for 1/16, much bigger than even a Henglong Panther Late Version.

I know Tamiya is supposed to be the Rolls Royce of Models but for the life of me I cannot see where 1075.00 pounds equates to 175.00 dollars.

I have about 20 different Heng long tanks which I can buy upgrades for, to turn them into more realistic beasties which to some I have done and they really look the goods when finished.

I have nearly finished doing a Tiger 1 with all the brass parts,  etching parts , new gearboxes and  Motors to take all the extra weight, plus, all the other stuff like sandbags, canvas, wooden boxes with shells, correct Tank commander and other crew and this tank really looks the goods plus it has the engine sounds smokes and shoots not infrared.

Now ith all of that I would guestimate the cost to be in the vicinity of 500.00 Aus.

The Tamiya I believe is in Kit form, you then have to put it together then add any aftermarket accessories you would like to finish the Tank off - More Money. I have never owned a Tamiya Kit but then at minimnum of 725.00 pounds I probably never will.

Cheers - Armo

Post by: airwolf572010 on February 14, 2012, 10:50:14 am
Yes I second that question and is it a Tamiya??? Kit. Lots more to do I see, and what was the approx costing of that Kit???

Just for interest sakes and my previous comments.

By the way you are talking in Metal I believe.

I just found a complete Tiger Metal bottom hull complete with all the rear end plus, upgraded brass gearboxes and motors for a Tiger 1 here in Australia for sale BRAND NEW 250.00 Aussie.

Now if I add that to my nearly completed Metal Tiger, with paintwork completed, all the accessories I could ever need, and I am still under the 700.00 Aussie mark???

Great Kits or not, a delight to build or not, not everyone has the skill or knowledge to build a kit at all no matter how hard they try, if you get the gist of my meaning hence RTR stuff.

Trucks - Tanks I guess after all you tank people buy Blue Suede Shoes no available in Uk I might get to try a Tamiya, haha and then my opinions might change what do ya reckon over there.

I will do a Krafty Kid imitation if he does'nt mind 'ANYONE OUT THERE GOT A CHEAP TAMIYA TANK FOR AN OLD PENSIONER' I WILL PAY FOR FREIGHT TO AUSSIE LAND'

I reckon that's about right any takers haha Perhaps a TRUCK maybe haha

Cheers :-))

Hi, its a 1/6 tank from Mark-1 Tanks.
I bought the tank used not so long ago, the original owner upgraded the metal tracks (the modern ones with the rubber pads so as not to rip the tarmac up!) with stronger pins, bolts and locknuts as the original ones can break.
I am doing a refit, repaint etc to it, not sure what yet but either standard green and black or maybe the Gulf War sceme and also put a GPMG and mount on the turret and other parts and accessories to make it more realistic and then weather it.
It is full RC control with operation on twin sticks, proportional engine sounds etc and turret rotation and gun elevation all operating on 6 channels.
Will be putting a smoke unit into during the work which will require the electrics, piping and cutting the upper hull for exhaust grills.
Pictures will be postted as I go along.
Many thanks for the comments!!!!

Hello Lads, I am just finishing my second Tamiya build, a Jagdpanther.
These kits are expensive....but a real pleasure to build. The instructions are easily followed, and the sound system reflects the real tank sounds.
Tamiya produce quality kits, and for my money, worth the extra .
However I have no doubt you can achieve similar results with the less expensive models.

Best wishes...Mick

Hello getemuphigh, the tank is a 1/6 scale Armortek A34 Comet MK1A.
It weighes around 85kgs (187lbs)... and is fitted with all the 'sounds' .
I treated myself last year and built the all metal kit over about six months.

I sold my motorcycles to fund the tank. So, I now transport the model on my motorcycle trailer to various Vintage/Classic shows.

I enjoyed every minute of the build....like most of our models costs can vary.
It is only recently that I have 'splashed out' and purchased the Armortek kit.
Presently I am building the Tamiya Jagdpanther....can't take it with me.

Best wishes....Mick

Thanks KK some diagrams would be helpful, I've taken it apart but I don't know which  board controls what....

I need to buy a transmitter for it, or is it possible to use a planet t5? Also 1 of the gearboxes seems to be sticking, turning by hand every few rotations it locks up, wiring a battery directly to the motor it works but 'pulses' as it forces its way past the point of locking... not sure what else might be wrong with it and can't check until I can turn it on and try using the controls to see what works and what doesn't.

Thanks I'll check that link out tomorrow, off to work now :(

I don't have rc tanks but I have a lot of remote controlled cars, buggies and tracks with me.  I love stadium trucks as you can just go all out with them and let them jump around on trails that could be ever so challenging.

I would really like to try tankers as well though I have no good place to run them with.  The usual road would be great but I am looking at running them on off days and hours to be able to get something straight out of it.

What's the best size of rc tank?

depends on the size of your bank balance  ;D

Seriously tho 1:16 seems to be the most common and best catered for in the upgrades market
The Heng Long range are very popular for those on a budget (RTR start at around 60quid) but the number of upgrades and extra detailing parts is immense.... be warned tho it's very easy to sink several hundred pounds into a model
Next up are the Tamiya Tanks with a nice range of upgrades but the inital price can be abit steep (4-600quid)

After that you have the larger scales with likes of armourtek.... these will set you back thousands.
I would suggest picking up a Heng long tank to see if its really what you want.  You can easily upgrade it and if it turns out you are not a "Tanker" the investment is not too bad

Martin
on my heng long tank it uses 2 x 380 type motors working in 2 gear boxes and the motors can be taken off the gearboxes but as for the esc's urgh they are pretty crappy and built into the rx and other electronics board
the tracks ? are you thinking of using them as drive belts between the motors and shafts ?
i am considering replacing the tanks electronics with 2 x viper marine 15 amp esc's , a spekky 8 channel rx and micro swithches to work the gun and turret motors as the radio range is pretty limited (25 or so yards )

Yes, that sort of thing. just the controller board and motors.
You say the 'Long hen!' type aren't much cop, but what about the Tamiya types?
Or are they mega bucks anyway?
Title: Re: rc tanks
Post by: Stormbringer on August 10, 2012, 12:24:28 am
dont know about the tamiya type but would think they are a lot better than the heng long type but will prob cost an arm and a leg
tamiya tiger tank is about £400 or so , heng long tiger is £60-80 ( cheapish copy of tamya tank )
there was a problem with earlier versions of the heng long boards that the esc's were on the thermal limits just moving the tanks and were burning out but later boards arnt as bad but you could check out some tank forums and that may let you know what types and makes of boards to go for

I have a motor gearbox setup with metal gears from a Heng Long tank if you want it... bought in error and it fits none of the tanks we currently own lol.

As for the speed controller cant help you there, besides they are an all in one unit containing the ESC, RX, smoke, sound, etc

It's big and impressive but no proportional track speed, just half and full.  >:-o

"Fully radio control high detail 1/16 scale tank featuring high gripping caterpillar tracks, proportional speed forward, back, right and left movement "

I've got an early tiger 1, with smoke and sound, and as you say it's got the rx14 board so it's stop, go, go faster.

Martin if you just want the controls, you can buy the board and wiring separately rather than buy a whole tank and rip it apart.

So I've taken the Heng Long Tiger I tank  back (with the pre RX-18 cntl board) and got a credit note which I duly turned into 2 x 15 Mtronics ESC, a shop returned faulty Smasher destroyer, a small set of jewellers screw drivers, Graupner fire monitor and some bullet connectors.... + £22 :-))

I'm still pondering the 'use tank bits in a twin motor model boat ' idea but it's looking less and less cost effective the more I look into it.

1. The cheapest RX-18 based tank I can find is £70 +p&p (RX-18 are the "fully proportional" controllers.)

2. The bit's can be bought separately (eg. ebay) RX-18 (£20) + Rx (£5) + Tx (£15) + Motor set (£12) + battery (£10) = £62

3. Cheapo 2.4Ghz radio (£30) + 2 x ESC (£40+) + Motors (£10-30) + battery (£10-30) = £90

4. Tank RC gear is mostly 27Mhz and usually limited to 3 switable channels and of quite limited range.

5.  I Did find this on 2.4Gig for £60 -  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120977543476?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120977543476?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649)

6. Tank RC does have additional 'built in' options for sound, other more "channels" for turret movement, sound, lights,
smoke, etc. and I still like the idea of full steering control (for two motors) on one stick.

7. Option 3 above, IMHO, still offer the best overall control in the long run....

............ just thinking out load  8)

Thanks guys,    The tracks are nylon seat belts with oak links superglued on.      It's powered with a 6v 4amp SLA battery through an Mtronics 15amp marine ESC to two Heng Long Panther G steel gearboxes via micro off switches for steering.   The drive sprockets are for Walker Bulldog tank and works great in soft sand and stones but doesn't steer too well on grass because the inside track grips the grass and stops it from sliding round.       A smooth track would be best on grass maybe depends what you drive on.     Regards Geoff.

i see lots of good quality photos of tanks , im requesting a little information , im currently changing the rather budget quality heng long rc to a spektrum dx6i set up , the spped control is now through a pair of mtroniks viper 15s and a mtroniks tank mixer which works very well ( no more heng long dance ! ! )  however as weve removed the rx18 unit ive now lost the ability to rotate the turret  and lift / lower the barrel , im also now missing the sounds ! has anybody else converted the turret / barrel , & how have you done it please ? jon / kev

thank you for the link jack , ive sorted the turret rotation , its now driven through a mini servo circiut board , were off to pick up a couple of micro switches in the morning to activate the barrel and main gun firing ( its got the bb kit fitted ) ive wired the smoke unit via a seperate slide switch , and kevin has just ordered an engine sound unit from action ! jon

Post by: plug on February 06, 2013, 09:13:08 pm
Your welcome Jon, my tanks are the bb firing ones, just a bit of fun as for the smoker ( the standard heng long one ) a lot of people me included take them out because they are a drain on the battery and it's hit and miss if they work properly, overfilling is the bigest problem
regards Jack.

Post by: triumphjon on February 07, 2013, 05:38:31 pm
ive left the firing kit alone , just removed the plugs that would have paired it to the old rx18 , with a pair of micro switches operated with a micro servo and operated through one of the standard stick channels , one half will operated the firing motor the other will make the barrel lift , ive heard the original smoker is proverbially crud , its currently wired with an isolator switch , when it gives up we will look at changing it for somthing better . jon

Hi everyone, what sort of pulling power do these R/C tanks of yours have?
I'm considering buying one and then removing the turret and replacing it with some form of scratch built cabin and turning the whole thing into some form of tracked vehicle capable of towing my r/c boat along on a trailer of some form.

The boat is 1 metre in length and with batteries weighs about 10lb.
The whole rig would be more for show and occasional use rather than being used everytime I sail the boat.

Many thanks

Post by: triumphjon on February 13, 2013, 06:09:56 pm
sounds interesting chris , think id rather start with a rolling hull with motors/ gearboxes and tracks rather than buying a complete tank and throwing half of it away . a point worth noting is the heng long ones fit the battery underneath which may be a problem if your planing to cradle launch your model boat !

Thanks for the headsup re the battery location triumphjon. I had been looking at a jagdpanther - the one without a revolving turret - this afternoon on ebay. If I took the barrel off, with a minimum of scratchbuilding I would have a cabin of sorts because it's already part of the design of the tank.

One thing I did notice on ebay was the vast number of spare parts for sales, are these 1/16 scale rc tanks really that unreliable?

its not going to be an easy conversion to alter a truck/ buggy into a tracked vehicle , youd be better off starting with a tank or track laying vehicle , this will at least give you the twin motor / gearbox units along with a set of tracks , ive noticed a trader on ebay who uses the name tankforce1 who has several lower hulls and running gear for sale that dont cost too much , this could be a good starting point . id also look at altering the hull to fit the battery inside the hull rather than in a box below the hull !

After many many years of building ships, boats, aircraft, helicopters and tanks, I have gone mad and started another tank. BUT this time it's 1/2 scale. We have seen the wonderful manned model ships ( I was tempted, but lack water) so how about manned model tanks ?  A YouTube search for " scaled tank " or username Gizmo4T will give you an idea. Mine is to be a Matilda 2 . . . . . So good the Australians made a song about it .

Nice job, like you i've just updated a panther g with taigen electrics and made the turret do full 360 degree turns using some bits i had lying around, tell a lie i did buy the pick up wire, could'nt solder it so used some 3 amp conectors, the next one i do in a tiger i'll try the phosphor bronze strip. It's easier to do with the recoil unit fitted just use a slip ring or telephone anti tangle device but with mine they have bb units in the and it hangs down below the rotation ring

ooooo that's ofal,  {-), anyway so is my soldering  >:-o, did all right last year, just tried soldering a M6 brass nut to a piece of M8 thread - without getting solder in either thread, would have preferred to have two nuts, one on top of the other on top of the M8 thread, but had to resort to just the one - reluctant to try again, initially tried it with a 40W soldering iron and a serious bit of cleaning and tinning no luck, probably due to the large heat sink of the vice etc, so used a blow torch - one extreme to another, just hope there's enough thread with the M6 nut, with another acting as a locking nut.  Anyway getting of topic.  :D.

I have a tiger from Tamiya, been a while since been out of the photocopy box she is in, but going to be looking through the loft - workshop soon for all the other kits I have.  O0

Of course I have tanks doesn't every one  {-) {-)
The King Tiger and the Sherman I built some years ago from Tamiya full option kits both are upgraded with metal tracks, The Pershing is a Heng long I came across on e-bay a few years ago listed as (non working spares or repair) I thought it was worth a punt and to my surprise I got it very cheap, when it arrived it looked almost new, opened it up and looked at the control panel and on the under side immediately found the problem a wire detached form it using the length of the wire I narrowed it down two six likely soldering points on closer inspection I could see the signs of a broken wire on one of them, so I soldered it in place and put it back together switched on and the lights started flashing, pushed the ignition button and it burst into life, not a patch on my Tamiya's but for a tenner it'll do  :-))

Hi guys,[/size]I am looking for some kind of mechanism to go in the end of my battleship gun barrels. They would be the same type as what the model Tank boys have.Hopefully this will include as the high powered red bulb that gives off a flash as well as perhaps a sound system, but I suspect that this would not be suitable, because as well as the big bang for the 15inch guns, they also have a machine gun sound also.I am not capable of making my own so would be looking at the complete flash unit.I dont really know what to search for on a certain auction site.Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction please? Post by: radiojoe on May 30, 2014, 09:56:39 am
Hi Rottweiler,  You don't mention the scale of your battle ship, I say this because the flash unit in Tamiya tanks is a fairly bulky cable and the flash unit on the end is about 15mm x 5mm so your barrel would need to be around 6mm dia. plus the speaker is quite large, depending on which tank model but around 120mm x 80mm x 50mm. and also the multi function units are not that small, and although the flash and sound of main gun and machine gun are very good you also have the other sounds, IE. turret turn, gun elevation and depression and of course the engine which differs according to the tank type, not sure it would sound right for a battle ship to have a Detroit Continental radial engine, whether you could mute the engine sound I couldn't say, just thought you might like an idea of sizes :-))  Joe
Title: Re: RC Tanks
Post by: Rottweiler on May 30, 2014, 11:01:15 am
Hi Joe,
Thanks for your reply

my battleship is actually 1/96th scale and is 6 foot 6 inch long, and the gun barrels would indeed take that size fitting. I am not short of space that is for sure.So from what you have said,I assume that the various sounds within the sound unit cannot be easily isolated, to only play what  is needed? I could make use of the turret movements and elevations, but would as you say have no use for the engine sound or the machine gun.Thats a pity, because I thought maybe this would be the way to go.Ah well back to the drawing board.I can use servos and available stuff to turn the turret, it is just this intense flash I really wanted.I think I may be looking at using the flash unit from a disposable camera,if I can get hold of a couple.
Thanks again,
Mick F

Hi Mick , I'm not saying you can't mute the sound there may well be a way to do it. may be by just cutting a couple of wires, but they are fairly expensive units to experiment with, but I can confirm the gun flash and sound is very realistic and very loud with volume turned up  O0 >Joe

Admiralty electronics do a gun flash unit (AE9186) and 16 inch gun salvo (AE9081) that can be used together. They are available here:

Post by: radiojoe on May 30, 2014, 02:27:37 pm
Hi Mick, on close inspection the flash unit is a cable with a capacitor about half way in a shrink sleeve and probably an ultra bright led on the end in an orange shrink sleeve, the other end has a plug with four wires, now I am no electronic wizard but it would seem to me that two of these wires charge the capacitor and the other two by means of a momentary switch, trigger the capacitor to discharge to the led. these units are sold as a spare part, it may be worth experimenting with one, just a thought,   ok2  Joe.

i was once at the local purpose built boating lake/pond..when a guy came on to water with huge battle ship...on the side of the pond/lake was a cafe....people was eating/drinking out side.it was a nice hot sunny day..getting back to battle ship..it was about half way in the pond.when explosions came from the boat..the guy used black power in his guns..the park wardens/workers told him to get the boat out and not to bring it again....but the guy with the battle ship..said theirs no restictions  in what boats go on the water only petrol boats was banned as kids also go on the water with paddle boats..but it was a school day and their was no paddle boats in use.............but they did make him take the boat home...............

No surprise there, you need a licence for black powder and a pyrotechnics licence to use it in public displays  :police:

Hi Mick,

Admiralty electronics do a gun flash unit (AE9186) and 16 inch gun salvo (AE9081) that can be used together. They are available here:

http://www.model-dockyard.com/acatalog/Admiralty-Electronic-Accessories.html (http://www.model-dockyard.com/acatalog/Admiralty-Electronic-Accessories.html)

Regards,

Roger.

This looks like the best option for your needs. however, I dont think the flash is synchronised with the sound and that is the problem. Without using a Tamiya tank system, I have yet to find a suitable 'Big Gun' light and sound effect unit. I am pursuing AA gun effects, but these will lack the co-ordinated flash and bang effect, but will simulate multiple AA guns firing at once with a single gunfire sound effect backing it up. My excuse, the model is a scale 1/4 mile away and you would expect a lag between flash and bang...good excuse?

About time I put a tank up in the RC Tanks section...my latest addition to the 'fleet'. A WWII German Sturmtiger, not a pretty tank by any standards. I obtained it from the Treasurer of Portsmouth and District Model Powerboat Club ( yup, thats why he is never at events, building tanks!! :-)) ).
Received nicely primered in a three tone camouflage, which I then painted over...

Then I took it to the Model Show at Bovingdon in Dorset a couple of weeks ago. The Display Team were attending with ONE boat...and lots of Tanks!

Pyrotechnics going in it later..single shot, lots of flash and smoke only. As its land based I will be excercising even more caution in the installation than I would in a boat..publics a lot closer.

Hi all. I have just purchased a Heng long Sherman, for my grandson, honest :-) I have tried to apply the decals, but with out any luck, they will not leave the sheet. I followed the instructions to the letter, but still no joy. Any ideas any one. Cheers all. Phil

Well going over the obvious is the only thing I can suggest. They are like letraset or vinyl transfers from BECC. Remove the backing or low tack film from behind the transfer. Place in position and rub down vigorously with a wooden implement..lolly stick, bit of balsa stick etc. Leave for at least fifteen minutes before attempting to remove the shiny upper carrier film, peeling back against the transfer to reduce tearing load on the decal.
If the above doesnt work, you may have a problem :}

Yes unfortunately Modelworks went bump in 2003, there is still the odd unbuilt kit if you are lucky enough to drop on one, they were originally sold in separate kits, hull/turret, wheels/tracks etc so as to break up the overall cost, total was about £3000.

Hey folks, my latest build an isreali m50 sherman, there is a build thread here:

https://www.rctankwarfare.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=14021

I've gone for a period Sinai grey which is 50/50 tamiya dark yellow and buff with a little bit of medium grey added to taste. She uses an IBU2 with tamiya KV-1 sounds. There is a tamiya battle system with the emitter hidden in the spot light.

Hi Tom....and this is rather different than the fast luxury yacht  O0

I viewed your build thread.....that is some pretty amazing detail that Tamiya create in their work....I suppose it is a supply & demand situation......the more demand , the more they will spend in development detail

One thing I am unsure of is the interface between the turret proper, and the rectangular interface which supports the mantlet plate & hence the barrel......I see & understand the recoil shroud OK.....but just not sure of the representation of the [olive green] vertical and horizontal stich welds?............

The same or similar representation appears in other images where major elements are joined .......Derek

Post by: TomHugill on July 20, 2015, 11:37:10 pm
Hi Derek, there isn't very much of the Tamiya original tank left, just the chassis and the basis of the turret. Most of the detail is scratch built, photo etch or some bits have been 3d printed and extra detail added.

The weld seam represents this:

http://data4.primeportal.net/tanks/anon_idf/m50_super_sherman/images/m50_super_sherman_24_of_59.jpg

Although it's larger on the model. The housing attached to the turret that the mantlet pivots from allowed a larger gun to be mounted in the sherman turret without having to enlarge the turret ring. This had to be compensated for by the large counter weight on the rear of the turret.

Strange as I've not been hit with VAT from Stellas,  but only the 'handling'  by parclefarce of around £25.

That Vat sounds horrendous.

That might include vat kenny, the parcel force handling fee is £15 so the rest could be the vat. I've only had a handling fee when I've been charged something

hi all
i know i have asked this question before but still confused
stella  models have a new batch of leopard tamiya tanks in reduced price  ,this is where the confusion starts

stella models
leopard tank £525 + £106 postage     total £631.o.o
tank zone     £749 including free postage and a cd rom
can any one explain the vast difference  in price bearing in mind that both would be imported into the uk probably via the far east

I thought Stella models was not UK based. Anyway tank zone are a rip off, the Tamiya tanks they say they stick are just ordered from manheader off ebay, so you can wind up paying customs charges. The best place for Tamiya tanks is banzai hobby, the shipping is cheaper and the tanks are cheaper, will probably be paying vat, but you would with the orhers.
