show fast approaches

Glynn Guest Competition

Special Announcement

The 2015 Convention has a very special Guest of Honour - Glynn Guest.  There is therefore a Special Competition for youngsters under 16 years of age.

The Competition will be to build a Glynn Guest model from a plan which will be sent to you, free of charge, as soon as the Secretary receives your entry form.  Once the boat has been built we would appreciate receiving a photograph of the completed boat, at which time the competitor will be sent free passes for both days of the Convention - also free of charge,

Please download the entry form and return it to the Secretary, Jean Barlow, as soon as possible in order that you can start building your boat.

Please Note :-
The spirit of the competition is that the plan is utilised to build a modified model, say a patrol boat or whatever.  As long as the basic hull is recognisable from the UTE plan, then that is good enough.  Innovation and ingenuity is what we are looking for.

Best of luck

Full details to be found on the Conventions website.

TLB......reading through the WEB site material ...would be great to attend ....but from 22,000 km away would make it a little expensive  O0

However this bring me onto the main comment.......£7.00 for Adults, Children (under 5 free) & 5 to 16  £3.00 is an expensive day for the typical family of four

£20.00 per family............ >>:-(.....if you were only able to donate £800.00 from profits last year would suggest either very few visitors or very high administration costs  :o...

Sorry to tell you, Derek, but it's a very cheap day out compared with what's asked at many popular leisure parks. I know the names will mean nothing to you in Australia but I've been doing a bit of research into the cost of "leisure days out" in the UK.
For example, Alton Towers is one of the best known of these attractions. A day ticket for a family of four is almost £160 - and that's the cheapest I could find on a Price Comparison website. Thorpe Park is almost £240. These are on-line prices, booked in advance. Turn up on the day and you'll pay more.
For the more traditional family days out, Woburn Abbey Safari Park is £71 while Whipsnade Zoo is £65. A Premier League football game for a man and two lads would cost nearly £200 (by the time you've added up the admission and all the assorted fast food, car parking etc together). Even a little local farm park where kids can see and pet animals will charge you £37.50 for that same family of four. The only thing I could find for a similar price to the Haydock Convention was the Notts County Agricultural Show (Adults a tenner; kids under 17 free), and that's outdoors.
Haydock Park charge the organisers a rent for the show, and I doubt that will be peanuts because it's a quality venue. Frankly I'm amazed that any contribution to charity can be made, let alone eight hundred quid. As for expensive administration, I believe that Jean and Arthur Barlow do most of the organisation and I doubt very much if they would take anything for their efforts.

It's a fact that many - if not most - of the folk who make model boats are what we call senior citizens (myself included). It's unfortunate that their idea of what constitutes a fair and reasonable price for anything these days seems stuck firmly in the 1960's.

Derek old boy,

Twenty spondoolies is really quite cheap here in the UK for a family of four. Most places will cost the thick end of a ton at least and if a family of four wanted to watch Everton (and who the blazes would want to do that I don't know) or the Reds then a it be a double ton. This of course would be on top the travel costs (petrol £1.10 diesel £1.20 or so per litre) grub and dunny fees.

If you want to make the effort though there is always some floor space here at budgie towers.

Thanks DM & LB for your candid comments re costings....etc...

I would have thought paying a substantial entry fee to see a 1st Grade sporting event [OZ playing GB at the SCG] would appeal to some >>:-( ........my youngest daughter took me to see the Rolling Stones a few months back.....so can understand the costs involved

Hi Derek
I think the above posts give a suitable explanation really.
Numbers are good but the venue cost is as mentioned not cheap.
No, numbers are not published and I am not aware of any events who do so.

Please note that this thread is not for discussion about pricing, numbers etc.. It is to promote a Model Boat Show.

The Model Boat Convention gets better every year and bigger too.

I doubt any model boat event is held in a better venue; Haydock is like a 4 star hotel.

Twenty six visiting clubs, a number of personal exhibitors and numerous traders there too.

Congratulations; not only to the organisers, but to the clubs for the incredible models on their carefully designed stands.

It was a great day out and so pleased to meet so many other modellers.

Fantastic show with some stunning models. Especially impressed with HMS Warspite. Good selection of traders and all very friendly & helpful. Only thing missing for me was a Type 12 Frigate which could of helped me with my own build. My 13 month old daughter was mesmerised by the teddy bear rowing boat with the waving monkey, brilliantly executed!

TLB...some interesting vessels, however one on I cannot fathom  :o is the twin shaft drive

Two x twin motors, each pair to their own common gear box and single output shaft....with each opposite ended motor of the same rotation which by mounting reverses the actual rotation .....is this why each motor has a common direction arrow?

We see what appears to be a common setup angle between motors 2 and 4, but the belt angle from motor 1 is different >:-o?

Each motor to gearbox toothed pulleys appear as 1:1, however the output below No 1 motor suggests a step up ratio to the propeller shaft......or is it just an illusion?......Derek

Thanks Colin.......about page 100 we get to understand the dual drive a little better............

So even with toothed belt drives, still begs the questions of two motors on one shaft which has been discussed in another thread last week......Derek

Hullo Ned.....certainly yes, many modern naval vessels have variations on CODAG, or DOGCO  {-).....

Our FFG's [Oliver Perry Class Frigate] used a GE LM2500 gas turbine coupled in through a very sophisticated gearbox assembly with an auxiliary input shaft fed by a high speed diesel engine [possibly a GM variant]...thankfully my role was on deck or in launcher or gun mount housings, not in grubby engine compartment spaces >>:-(

Newer to my time, I think our ANZAC class Frigates have the same but twin GE LM2500 + Wartsilla CODAG drives...this [CODAG] concept had little to do with attaining higher speed, as missiles can cover greater distances in immeasurably less time, so the design was more to do with versatility and ease of maintenance whilst underway at speed

But I think the example shown in the ABELL transmissions does not have any compensation for varying efficiencies or inefficiencies between motors, let alone the power loss created with the 1:1 belt drives ...

Having said this... they do look the part......Derek

Maybe the reason is he likes it like that, It's his model to build the way he likes  and it is very impressive. The whole model is impressive including the launch trolley.

What ship is this?

A friend took this photo at the event, but can't remember what ship it was, or who built it. He said it was in the main hall, just to the right of the desk where people paid. It's obviously huge, so I'm hoping someone in this forum recognizes it. Anyone?
