That'll do for me, Frank...what I'm thinking is to epoxy sytrene sheet across the bow and both sides, level with the hull bottom, to square the whole thing off. Then the same across the stern, leaving a tunnel for the steering nozzle. It's only a couple of sheets of styrene after all, no great expense.

18"X 8" is the official size of a Springer, so what size were you thinking of stretching it to?

Not stretching it, no...I want to square the hull off. Imagine an upside down Springer hull...now stand styrene sheet all around it so it's level with the hull bottom...you then have a hull in a box, with a cut out for the steering nozzle. Yes...make sense?

I'm just wondering if I could convert a Springer hull into a Motorflote hull...or maybe it would be easier to completely scratch build a Motorflote.

I shall go and lay down in a darkened room now...

What's the hull made of? styrene or grp? If its styrene thats an easy job to do with the correct solvent such as plastic weld. If its grp you will have quite a problem sticking the styrene to the grp. The thing with styrene is the stuff likes to be 'welded' that is, the solvent dissolves both pieces of styrene slightly. As the solvent evaporates the two pieces of styrene become one- justl like welding two bits of steel together.

If you intend to use an epoxy glue you will find it will peel off the styrene after a period of time. I was recommended stabilit express acrylic glue, but I found the stuff useless on styrene sheet. what I eventually used was old style Evo Stick, the solvent based one. Roughen the styrene sheet to get a good 'key' smear on the evostick, the solvent in it partially melts the styrene creating a bond and because its an impact adhesive with elastic properties it will also bond to grp. Of course in the UK as far as I am aware, Evo Stick is now only available as a water based product so I have no idea how it would work out in your situation.

Well gentlemen, thanks for the advice...you'll be pleased to know that common sense has kicked in, and I'll not be attempting to modify my Springer hull. I'm hoping to have got a friendly and well known hull manufacturer to make me a CNC cut kit of parts (from styrene) for a Motorflote to the original plans, thus solving all my problems in one go.

For a while I've been pestering Andy down at Models By Design to make me up a kit of the Motorflote, and I'm pleased to say he's relented. I received some photos from him today of the hull, all cnc cut from styrene. He's done a super job on it by the looks of the pictures...thanks Andy.

To this end, I've been sorting out the bits n' bobs I'll be needing to commence building once the kit of parts arrives, I've practically got all I need now. It'll be nice to build a boat that I can move about and to use when it's done.

I'm intrigued. Why would you need a kit to make a boat that is basically several boxes joined together? Surely if you can cut a straight line with a Stanley knife you can make your own.

David, you have hit the nail right on the head with your second sentence. On a good day I can cut a straight line with the best of them...on a bad day I couldn't even draw a straight line, let alone cut one. My bad hand days seem to be increasing recently, despite the new medication...the weather doesn't help either. Rather than waste several sheets of styrene I asked Andy to do the honours on his cnc machine...the rest you know.

Believe me, I wish with all my heart that I could use my limbs like I could ten years ago, but I cannot...I hate having to ask people for help, and relying on people, but I am lucky that I have some very good friends who will help me out and keep me in the hobby.

Keep up the good work!  :-))

Thanks for the kind words, Dave...I hope my answer above didn't sound arrogant. Today is a good day so far, I could cut styrene all day, but with RA you just never know what the next hour will bring, let alone the next day.

But, there's always someone out there much worse off than I, so I shall just count my blessings and keep going at it.

Morning chaps..

The brackets (for want of a better word) that navigation lights sit in....what colour would they be? Would they be painted red/green, or black? They are for the Motorflote if it makes a difference?

Thanks,

I believe it's relevant to the year of the ship.  They used to be the colour of the lamp before a certain date, but now they are black, so as not to reflect the colour all over the place.

Cheers

Another Motorflote question..(who said ''not again?'')

The plan calls for a Monoperm, which I haven't got...but, I do have either an Aeronaut Race 400 or an ACTion 385. I don't want large amounts of speed and high revs, I need a motor which will give me plenty of pushing power...what would be the one to go for, chaps? Any recommendations? Battery pack will be a 7.2v 3700niMh pack, prop will be a maximum of 35mm 3 blade, probably plastic.
