WHO OWNS THIS BOAT
« on: January 17, 2007, 10:12:24 am »

Have had a query from a modeller in California who is keen to contact the owner of this tug - The picture was taken by Martin at the MPBA national finals in September 2005  (Wicksteed Park, Kettering) - likely to be a member of a Northern Club

That`s either the "Smit Tempest" or the "Smit Taifun".

Friend of mine is doing that at the moment, scale 1:50- but in Germany, not in the UK....

       Hi Captain Chris.
I suspect that the 'Typhoon' your friend is on about may be owned by John 'Poll' Pollitt who is a member of the forum and sails with Feathertsone M.B.C. at Balne Moor. You should be able to send him an IM through the members list.

        Cheers,      Paul.

Hello Poll

Lovely condition boat. I can see a lot of effort gone into it. Well done

Just a quick question.  Would you consider covering the 'Bow thruster' holes with a grill of some sort.  I have been puzzling over this, as I am building the 'Aziz'.  I wondered if, when sailing in weeds, they might be sucked up and jam in the tube.  perhaps other members have a thought on the subject ?

Cheers...Ken

My son and I built a narrowboat with bow thrusters.   At the time we sailed on waters that were very weedy, and so we put a fine mesh grille over the b/t inlets.   Worked well.   Pete M

  Hi Kenny.
The bow thruster fitted to the typhoon is home made, It's fitted with a 45x plastic prop.
So been a large hole It's not much chance of blocking, Small strands of weed get sucked through
If I was to put a grill on the hole the small weed wouid block the b/thruster.
Most of the tug towing guy's don't fit the grill, But in your case I would give a small mesh a try.
Hope this as been a help.

  Regards   POLL.

I can much vouch for John's Typoon tug  bow thruster ( Ooo err Mrs! ) and probably the effective I've seen and it's quiet too!
I have a video clip somewhere is anyone wants to see the tug in action.....

Hi Boatmadman, You can get the hull & plan from metcalf mouldings at £77.00 + £10.00 p&p.
The scale is 1.50  It's got a home made B/Thruster the thruster hole is 50mm the prop is a 45x
plastic. the main drive is two Astra fan motors driving two 50mm props in 60mm steerable
Kort's.It's a working main winch, also working nav & mast lights.
If you are going to tow you must make shure you have a good seal on the stern deck because there is   not mush free board, the deck do's get awash. Batt's I use a 12.7 in the stern & and a 12.12 in the bow.
you need to have a light super structure the boat as a tendency to roll. Hope this has give you some help
